That\u2019s the vision with which I started the app that became Photoshop Touch, and I was enthusiastic about <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnack\/2011\/11\/check-out-mixel-social-collaging-for-everyone.html\">Mixel<\/a> (\u201csocial collaging for everyone\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>This week the creators of <a href=\"http:\/\/canv.as\">Canvas<\/a> pulled the plug on it, just like the Mixel creators before them. If people want to mash up images together, no one\u2019s yet found the magic recipe. (I\u2019ve grown similarly skeptical about <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnack\/2012\/03\/collaborative-drawing-is-there-a-there-there.html\">collaborative drawing<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnack\/2014\/01\/social-filmmaking-do-people-actually-want-to-make-videos-together.html\">filmmaking<\/a>. I want to be proven heinously, laughably wrong\u2026 but we\u2019ll see.)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the Canvas creators also <a href=\"http:\/\/chrishateswriting.com\/post\/74083032842\/today-my-startup-failed\">announced the demise<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/drawquest.com\">DrawQuest<\/a>, a social, gameified drawing tool. DrawQuest actually got more active use than I would have guessed: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2013\/02\/08\/moots-new-ipad-app-drawquest-challenges-users-to-create-and-share-drawings\/\">Launched a year ago<\/a> to inspire people to take on daily bouts of creativity through drawing challenges, it reached 1.4 million downloads, 550,000 registered users, <strong>400,000 monthly users, 25,000 daily users, and 8 million drawings<\/strong>.\u201d Pretty impressive for an iPad-only creation app!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to make a living here, though. As TechCrunch <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2014\/01\/21\/when-goods-not-good-enough\/\">points out<\/a>, the creators &#8220;found that <strong>selling paint brushes in a drawing app is a lot harder than selling extra lives in Candy Crush<\/strong>.\u201d That sucks.<\/p>\n<p>Appin\u2019 ain\u2019t easy, and I salute these guys for taking some swings &amp; at least discerning a pocket of interest.
