{"id":11349,"date":"2007-01-06T11:30:50","date_gmt":"2007-01-06T11:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnackdev\/2007\/01\/microsoft-gets-stony-kodak-goes-berserk.html"},"modified":"2007-01-06T11:30:50","modified_gmt":"2007-01-06T11:30:50","slug":"microsoft_gets_stony_kodak_goes_berserk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2007\/01\/06\/microsoft_gets_stony_kodak_goes_berserk\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft gets stony; Kodak goes berserk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s alternately funny, sad, or both when companies struggle to play against type &amp; redefine their brands.&#160; During my first month at Adobe, I got a horrible sunburn as I stood for hours on a pier in San Francisco, passing out Razor scooters and &quot;Splatterpunk&quot; temporary tats to 13-year-olds at the X Games.&#160; &quot;And this will help LiveMotion succeed&#8230; <em>how, exactly??,<\/em>&quot; I thought as I slowly carbonized like a pig on a spit.&#160; While Macromedia was releasing killer ads, Adobe was buying magazine spreads featuring a dude snowboarding down a volcano. <em>Yeesh<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft is now making some interesting efforts to redefine its image.&#160; Last year saw the hilarious and dead-on &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/video.google.com\/videoplay?docid=36099539665548298\">Microsoft iPod<\/a>&quot; self-parody video, and now they&#8217;re getting <em>way<\/em> out there with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clearification.com\">Clearification<\/a>, a site chiefly featuring the brilliantly stony ramblings of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comedycentral.com\/shows\/the_daily_show\/videos\/demetri_martin\/index.jhtml\">Demitri Martin<\/a>. Somehow, on some level, the site is theoretically related to Vista.&#160; Somehow.&#160; Anyway&#8230; [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.k10k.net\">Via<\/a>]&#160; Elsewhere they&#8217;ve posted the slightly incomprehensible <a href=\"http:\/\/msdewey.com\/\">MsDewey.com<\/a>&#160;(hey, the world loves attractive women) [<a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.macromedia.com\/md\/archives\/2006\/12\/ms_dewey_-_uh_k.cfm\">Via<\/a>], not to mention an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enchantedoffice.com\/\">online comic book about Office<\/a>. [<a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.macromedia.com\/jd\/archives\/2007\/01\/well_kiss_my_fr.cfm\">Via<\/a>] <\/p>\n<p>And now Kodak&#8211;evidently mad as hell &amp; not going to take it anymore&#8211;has released &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=Sz6XjXu-oT8\">Winds of Change<\/a>.&quot; In it a distinguished looking gentleman proceeds to flip out <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Howard_Beale\">Howard Beale<\/a>-style,  going off about how the company isn&#8217;t &quot;playing grab-ass anymore.&quot;&#160; It&#8217;s kind of great, and judging from the number of times I&#8217;ve seen the link sent around this week, it&#8217;s doing that whole viral thing.<br \/>\n[Via Ben Long, Katrin Eismann, and others] <\/p>\n<p>Slightly related: Slate ad critic Seth Stevenson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2156187\/\">slags<\/a> the Intel Core 2 Duo <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vZtCsxknt5k\">ads<\/a>: &quot;[They] feature perhaps the least-hip hipsters I&#8217;ve ever seen. What are these people wearing? Denim culottes? Green velvet suit vests? A snap-brim hat with a feather in the band? They look like they&#8217;re in a high school ska band. Word of advice, Intel: Do not attempt to make computer processing chips cool.
