{"id":12304,"date":"2007-04-05T09:26:58","date_gmt":"2007-04-05T09:26:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnackdev\/2007\/04\/what-my-parents-hear-when-i-talk-about-work.html"},"modified":"2007-04-05T09:26:58","modified_gmt":"2007-04-05T09:26:58","slug":"what_my_parents_hear_when_i_talk_about_wor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2007\/04\/05\/what_my_parents_hear_when_i_talk_about_wor\/","title":{"rendered":"What my parents hear when I talk about work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you talk to loved ones about techy stuff, do you imagine it sounds to them <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ya2huA-VDfw\">something like this<\/a>?&#160; The video, pitching a device called  &quot;The Retrooencabulator,&quot; may or may not be a gag, but it&#8217;s brilliant either way.&#160; Now, as I get ready to take a stage at Photoshop World, I can only hope my demo doesn&#8217;t sound like so much mumbo jumbo&#8230;&#160; [Via Michael Tapes]<\/p>\n<p>The vid reminds me of my first real Web job, when my company was designing a site for Brisk Iced Tea.&#160;(Remember <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adforum.com\/adfolio\/specialevents\/reel_detail.asp?ID=15448&amp;TDI=VD9W3qrD&amp;tb=15&amp;awy=0&amp;AW_ID=888835\">those claymation ads<\/a>?)&#160; I was so proud that I called my folks and walked them through pulling up the site.&#160; Even the most basic terminology can be a problem: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Me: &quot;Now click the window with Bruce Lee in it&#8230;&quot; <\/li>\n<li>Them: &quot;Oh, there&#8217;s no window.&quot;<\/li>\n<li>Me: &quot;What?&#160; I mean, you see Bruce Lee, right?&quot;<\/li>\n<li>Them: &quot;Oh yes.&quot;<\/li>\n<li>Me: &quot;Okay, now click the window he&#8217;s in&#8230;&quot;<\/li>\n<li>Them: &quot;But he&#8217;s not <em>in<\/em> a window, he&#8217;s in a temple of some sort&#8230;&quot;<\/li>\n<li>[Continue like this until I finally realize that they&#8217;re looking for a literal, physical window, and have no idea what the little box around the Web site is called.&#160; Aaaaand, <em>cut.<\/em>]   \n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n[Update: Okay, it&#8217;s gotta be a gag; see also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pbVY5teBzlg\">this Chrysler video<\/a>.  Sometimes during a long press tour, PMs will challenge one another to sneak little phrases into their demos (&#8220;the ol&#8217; college try,&#8221; &#8220;gonna end in tears,&#8221; etc.), just to keep it interesting.
