Word to the wise : RV+sand = elephant+tar pit; <i>oi vey<\/i>. Sadly, I didn&#8217;t manage to see a real live <a href=\"http:\/\/www.squidnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/adobe_photo_shop.jpg\">Adobe Photo Shop<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.macromedia.com\/jd\/\">Via<\/a>].&#160; I did, however, find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jnack.com\/DV07\/FireSale.jpg\">a great deal on California real estate<\/a> in Trona.&#160; (Hope you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-trona4oct04,0,6035066.story?coll=la-home-local\">like sulfur<\/a>&#8230; and breaking your windows just to cut your wrists.)&#160; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-trona4oct04-pg,0,5559074.photogallery?coll=la-home-local&amp;index=3\">Ballarat Bob<\/a> was MIA, but we caught up with our friend, the Mayor of Ballarat, along with his even more grizzled (!) dad&#8211;keepers of Charlie Manson&#8217;s truck &amp; black helicopters; here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jnack.com\/DV07\/Ballarat\/\">a small gallery<\/a>.&#160;<\/p>\n<p>Their one-room building (famous for $2 cans of Milwaukee&#8217;s Best&#8211;which <em>will taste good to you<\/em> when it gets hot enough) also features <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jnack.com\/DV07\/BallaratPhoto.jpg\">a photo I really love<\/a>.&#160; I don&#8217;t know a thing about its subject or its history, and I always choose not to ask.&#160; Sometimes it&#8217;s good to savor a little mystery. <\/p>\n<p>In a photographic vein, and starting with Death Valley: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Author &amp; photog Ben Long is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.completedigitalphotography.com\/?p=470\">just back<\/a> from the park as well, and he&#8217;s posted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.completedigitalphotography.com\/?p=470\">a gallery of terrific shots<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If the boys of Ballarat were ever to go digital, they might like the Kodak 1881:  a <a href=\"http:\/\/geeksugar.com\/216420\">digital camera as vintage locket<\/a>. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2007\/04\/20\/digital_camera_disgu.html\">Via<\/a>] <\/li>\n<li>&quot;You just had to run&quot;: TOP relays an anecdote from Steven Spielberg <a href=\"http:\/\/theonlinephotographer.blogspot.com\/2007\/04\/you-just-had-to-run.html\">on catching the dawn<\/a> for <em>Empire of the Sun. <\/em><\/li>\n<li>Author Will Self has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.will-self.com\/writing-room\/index.php\">documented his writing room<\/a>, festooned with Post-It notes.&#160; (I feel like he&#8217;s got a physical version of my copy of Contribute, from which I write this blog.&#160; It&#8217;s a warren of ideas and links, jotted in blurbs, competing for too little time.)
