{"id":12341,"date":"2007-05-07T13:04:23","date_gmt":"2007-05-07T13:04:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnackdev\/2007\/05\/3d-printing-goes-to-our-heads.html"},"modified":"2007-05-07T13:04:23","modified_gmt":"2007-05-07T13:04:23","slug":"3d_printing_goes_to_our_heads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2007\/05\/07\/3d_printing_goes_to_our_heads\/","title":{"rendered":"3D printing goes to our heads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russell Brown has a certain Jobsian knack for not only seeing interesting possibilities, but for getting folks to jump in on his crazy little journeys.&#160; A few months back, Photoshop 3D engineer Pete Falco and I accompanied Russell on a field trip to Monterey, CA-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cyberware.com\/\">Cyberware<\/a>.&#160; There Steve Addleman   was most hospitable as he scanned our domes (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jnack.com\/adobe\/headscans\/\">pix here<\/a>), turning them into digital files compatible with Photoshop CS3 Extended (quick clip of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jnack.com\/adobe\/headscans\/russellhead.html\">Russell&#8217;s gourd spinning in PS<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Ah, but why stop there when you can look fantastic in plastic, thanks to a 3D printing machine?&#160; Russell persuaded Steve Chapman of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gentlegiantstudios.com\/\">Gentle Giant Studios<\/a> to then render our busts, leading to quite possibly the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jnack.com\/vainglory\">vainest objects in my entire life<\/a>.&#160; I kept trotting out the damn things at our recent housewarming (&quot;Honey, they&#8217;re <em>conversation pieces<\/em>; they need a spotlight&quot;), only to get them firmly shooed back into an obscure bookcase. <\/p>\n<p>And yet that&#8217;s not the half of it: Russell re-teamed with these guys at last month&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adimconference.com\/\">ADIM conference<\/a>, scanning the attendees and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.russellbrown.com\/ADIMX\/index.html\">turning them into action figures<\/a>&#8211;some 130 full color, custom made heads in all.&#160; Right on!&#160; The only question: How can they top it for next year? <\/p>\n<p>Tangentially related at best: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.materialise-mgx.com\/fullscreen.htm\">Materialise MGX<\/a> produces consumer goods through what looks like an amazingly high-fidelity 3D printing process.<\/li>\n<li>Evil Mad Scientist wants to make 3D printing cheap and sweet&#8211;by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evilmadscientist.com\/article.php\/3printerpreview\">printing on sugar<\/a>.&#160; [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.core77.com\/blog\/object_culture\/sweet_rapid_prototyping_machine_6071.asp\">Via<\/a>] <\/li>\n<li>The NYT has an interesting article about rapid prototyping, but I waited too long to post it and now it&#8217;s behind a subscriber login.&#160; I&#8217;m <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/04\/01\/style\/tmagazine\/04remix.prototyping.t.html?_r=1&amp;oref=slogin\">providing the link<\/a> in case you have access. <\/li>\n<li>Speaking of 3D heads, Hoss Gifford&#8217;s got a  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberatedtheatre.co.uk\/chorus.htm\">whole chorus of &#8217;em<\/a> fashioned into a synthesizer.  <\/li>\n<li>And speaking of unusual heads, here&#8217;s Oliver Laric&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/oliverlaric.com\/pixel\/oliverlaric.htm\">rendered in IMG tags<\/a>.
