{"id":12383,"date":"2007-06-05T08:25:06","date_gmt":"2007-06-05T08:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnackdev\/2007\/06\/getting-punchy-or-whats-in-a-name.html"},"modified":"2007-06-05T08:25:06","modified_gmt":"2007-06-05T08:25:06","slug":"getting_punchy_or_whats_in_a_name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2007\/06\/05\/getting_punchy_or_whats_in_a_name\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Punchy (or, What&#039;s in a name?)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes finding the right words for a  feature is a bit of a challenge.&#160; &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unsharp_mask\">Unsharp Mask<\/a>,&quot; for instance, is a perfect example: a classically trained photographer may immediately get the reference, while other users are left saying, &quot;Sooo&#8230; To <em>sharpen<\/em> something, I choose <em>&#8216;Unsharp<\/em>&#8230;?&#8217;&quot;&#160; Working vocabularies vary by user. <\/p>\n<p>We ran into a one of these cases with the local contrast enhancement control added to the just-released <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnack\/2007\/05\/better_sharpeni.html\">Camera Raw 4.1<\/a>.&#160; Figuring that &quot;local contrast enhancement control&quot; was a tad wordy, the team went looking for alternatives.&#160; One candidate was &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sharpness_(visual)\">Acutance<\/a>&quot;&#8211;a term familiar to some photographers, but far from universally understood.&#160; The candidate I really favored was &quot;Punch&quot;: the slider tends to make an image look punchier.&#160; Unfortunately, the prospect of translating this idiosyncratic term into French, German, Japanese, etc. made it lose ground.&#160; The simpler &quot;Clarity&quot; ultimately prevailed. <\/p>\n<p>In the course of the conversation, Camera Raw engineer Zalman Stern offered some good quips. &quot;We could always translate &quot;punch&quot; to &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Umami\">Umami<\/a>&quot; in Japanese&#8230;,&quot; he wrote.&#160; And later: &quot;I was mostly joking in suggesting &#8216;Punch.&#8217; But to take it to the next<br \/>\nlevel of impossible-to-translate, we obviously need two sliders, <strong>&#8216;l337&#8217;<\/strong>\t  and &#8216;<strong>Teh Suck<\/strong>.&#8217; The latter only has negative values of course.
