{"id":1536,"date":"2014-12-10T05:58:36","date_gmt":"2014-12-10T13:58:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/?p=1536"},"modified":"2014-12-10T06:52:35","modified_gmt":"2014-12-10T14:52:35","slug":"turbocharged-brainstorming-what-do-you-think-of-adobe-layup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/10\/turbocharged-brainstorming-what-do-you-think-of-adobe-layup\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Turbocharged brainstorming&#8221;: What do you think of Adobe LayUp?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I first saw Khoi Vinh\u2019s collaborative design app Mixel, I wanted to throw up\u2014from jealousy.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d first met Khoi while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.layertennis.com\/match\/vinh-vs-felton\/#intro\">moderating a Layer Tennis match<\/a>\u00a0between him &amp; Nicholas Felton, and\u00a0at the time I was brainstorming about designers&#8217; needs for tablet apps. &#8220;What about &#8216;Photoshop Volley,'&#8221; I asked Khoi, describing a totally non-destructive, cloud-backed design environment centered on playful exchange of ideas &#038; artwork. It turns out he was working on something very similar, so we went off on separate paths. My team ended up building Photoshop Touch (a far more traditional app than I wanted to make), and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnack\/2011\/11\/check-out-mixel-social-collaging-for-everyone.html\">Mixel launched as much more what I had in mind<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly the app didn&#8217;t take off, but Khoi has continued to think about ways for tablets to help designers think &#038; share better. He&#8217;s been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.subtraction.com\/2014\/10\/08\/layup-a-new-app-for-ipad\/\">working with Adobe on a new iPad app call LayUp<\/a>, letting you make quick sketches that can evolve into styled renderings, and the response looks <a href=\"http:\/\/www.subtraction.com\/2014\/10\/09\/reactions-to-project-layup\/#more-607077\">pretty enthusiastic<\/a>. Check out some demos:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/108264123\" width=\"604\" height=\"454\" frameborder=\"0\" title=\"Adobe Project LayUp Demo\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/46cX_7AKBUA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The sketch-to-shape tech reminds me of (and almost certainly was lifted from) Adobe&#8217;s innovative\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/inspire\/2012\/12\/proto-wireframing-tablet.html\">Adobe Proto<\/a>\u00a0(for sketching wireframes that turned into real code), the moodboarding aspects recall <a href=\"http:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2012\/05\/11\/adobe-releases-ipad-version-of-conceptual-mood-board-collage-app\/\">Adobe Collage<\/a>\u2014apps that were\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jkost\/2011\/10\/announcing-adobe-touch-apps.html\">launched<\/a> 3 years ago, then <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/creativecloud\/refocusing-our-touch-app-development\/\">summarily executed<\/a> some months later. Maybe LayUp&#8217;s export of native PSD, AI, and InDesign files, its Typekit integration, and its cool history feature will change the game this time.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think?
