{"id":16297,"date":"2010-03-30T14:33:51","date_gmt":"2010-03-30T14:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnackdev\/2010\/03\/adobe-google-working-to-improve-flashbrowser-integration.html"},"modified":"2010-03-30T14:33:51","modified_gmt":"2010-03-30T14:33:51","slug":"adobe_google_working_to_improve_flashbrows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/30\/adobe_google_working_to_improve_flashbrows\/","title":{"rendered":"Adobe &amp; Google working to improve Flash\/browser integration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Great news: Better performance, better security, and tighter integration are coming to Web plug-ins &amp; browsers.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.chromium.org\/2010\/03\/bringing-improved-support-for-adobe.html\">the Google team<\/a> building the Chrome browser &amp; Chrome OS, &#8220;[W]e are working with Adobe, Mozilla and the broader community to help define the <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.mozilla.org\/Plugins:PlatformIndependentNPAPI\">next generation browser plug-in API<\/a>.&#8221;  As Flash Player engineering director Paul Betlem <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/flashplayer\/2010\/03\/improved_flash_player_support.html\">explains<\/a>, the new API specification will offer some distinct benefits over the current technology available:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The API will be <strong>operating system and browser-neutral<\/strong>, minimizing the chance of inconsistent behavior across platforms.<\/li>\n<li>The new API is being designed with the flexibility to allow plug-ins to <strong>more tightly integrate with host browsers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The new plug-in API will provide <strong>performance benefits<\/strong> since the host browser will be able to directly share more information about its current state.<\/li>\n<li>The tighter integration provided by the API can allow for a <strong>more secure browsing experience<\/strong> as it will be easier to unify security models and collaborate on security techniques, such as sandboxing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Google engineering VP Linus Upson says, &#8220;Users will automatically receive updates related to Flash Player using Google Chrome&#8217;s auto-update mechanism. This eliminates the need to manually download separate updates and reduces the security risk of using outdated versions.&#8221;  Developers can already <a href=\"http:\/\/dev.chromium.org\/getting-involved\/dev-channel\">download the Chrome developer channel version with Flash Player built in<\/a>.
