But knowing just where to draw the line between objectively wasteful crap (e.g. tedious file format conversion) and possibly welcome labor (e.g. laborious but meditative etching) isn&#8217;t always easy. What happens when you skip the proverbial 10,000 hours of practice required to master a craft? (And to make it meta, there&#8217;s my <a href=\"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/?s=vemodalen\">repetition<\/a> of the term.) \u201cSo we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past\u2026\u201d Or as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U1XKjzq1_aM\">Marshawn Lynch<\/a> might describe running through one\u2019s face, \u201c<em>Over &amp; over<\/em>, and <em>over &amp; over &amp; over<\/em>\u2026\u201d<\/li><li>As Louis CK deftly noted, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PdFB7q89_3U?t=82\">Everything is amazing &amp; nobody&#8217;s happy<\/a>.&#8221;<\/li><li>The disruption always makes me think of The Onion\u2019s classic &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theonion.com\/dolphins-evolve-opposable-thumbs-1819565718\">Dolphins Evolve Opposable Thumbs<\/a>&#8220;: \u201cHoly f*ck, that\u2019s it for us monkeys.\u201d My new friend <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/guskamp\/status\/1522405304729620480?s=20&amp;t=oVLkPPeVG1u1qpA2hBcMqw\">August<\/a> replied with the armed dolphin below. &#x1f4aa;&#x1f440;<\/li><li><span style=\"color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\">A group of thoughtful creators recently mused on &#8220;<\/span><a style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\" href=\"http:\/\/what%20ai%20art%20means%20for%20human%20artists\/\">What AI art means for human artists<\/a><span style=\"color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\">.&#8221;<\/span> Like me, many of them likened this revolution to the arrival of photography in the 19th century. It immediately devalued much of what artists had labored for years to master\u2014yet in doing so it freed them up to interpret the world more freely (think Impressionism, Cubism, etc.).<\/li><li><span style=\"color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\">Content-Aware Fill was born from the amazing PatchMatch technology (see <\/span><a style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/5024379\">video<\/a><span style=\"color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\">). We got it into Photoshop by stripping it down to just one piece (inpainting), and I foresee similar streamlined applications of the many things DALL\u2022E-type tech can do (layout creation, style transfer, and more).<\/span><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2021\/09\/13\/come-try-editing-your-face-using-just-text\/\">StyleCLIP<\/a> is my team&#8217;s effort to edit faces via text by combining OpenAI&#8217;s CLIP (part of DALL\u2022E&#8217;s magic sauce) with NVIDIA&#8217;s StyleGAN. <a href=\"https:\/\/replicate.com\/orpatashnik\/styleclip\">You can try it out here<\/a>.<\/li><li>Longtime generative artist Mario Klingemann used GPT-3 to coin a name for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/quasimondo\/status\/1534836084332535808?s=20&amp;t=nX0ytvmB4YByMPGwlAMLzw\">Promptomancy<\/a>.
