The interesting corollary, however, is that Snapchat\u2014by emulating in-person interactions\u2014makes people happier, at least relatively speaking. My takeaways from <a href=\"http:\/\/ns.umich.edu\/new\/releases\/23223-snap-decisions-more-happiness-gained-by-using-snapchat-than-facebook\">a new University of Michigan study<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ephemeral = intimate, chill, satisfying.<\/li>\n<li>This <strong>produces more happiness<\/strong> than curated worlds (highlight reels) like Facebook &amp; Instagram.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s second only to face-to-face interactions (which feel similar\u2014spontaneous, mundane).<\/li>\n<li>You <a href=\"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2014\/07\/02\/what-matters-more-the-lasting-or-the-fleeting\/\"><strong>pay more attention<\/strong><\/a> to what\u2019s fleeting because you can\u2019t see it again.<\/li>\n<li>Snapchat\u2019s \u201cless supportive\u201d (and thus <strong>more genuine<\/strong>?) than other media (\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2016\/01\/03\/the-instagram-lobster-trap\/\">OMG ur so hot!!<\/a>\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No wonder this thing <a href=\"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/09\/of-snapchat-primate-needs-and-taking-out-steps\/\">fulfills our primate needs<\/a>, getting them sending dozens or even hundreds of images per day. &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/kottke.org\/16\/02\/snapchat-like-the-teens\">That app is my life<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For years we\u2019ve known that browsing friends\u2019 highlight reels on Facebook makes people sad.
