Try painstakingly isolating an object in frame after frame of video. Learning how to do this in the 90\u2019s (using stone knives &amp; bear skins, naturally), I just as quickly learned that I never wanted to do it again. Thankfully tools like Rotobrush have come to After Effects, but like Quick Select in Photoshop, it was always pretty naive\u2014never knowing <em>what<\/em>\u00a0it was looking at.<\/p>\n<p>Upon joining Google in 2014, I saw some amazing early demos of smarter techniques to isolate objects in video. While trying (unsuccessfully) to bring the tech to Google Photos, I kept hucking\u00a0research paper links over the fence to my Adobe pals saying, \u201cJust in case you\u2019re not already looking into this\u2014please get on it!\u201d I always figured they were.<\/p>\n<p>Smash cut to 2018. I finally get to work with those folks I met in 2014, bringing fast segmentation to Pixel 3 (powering <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod\/original_images\/Iron_Man___Blog2FSocial_1.gif\">selfie stickers<\/a>, accelerating Portrait Mode) and beyond. Meanwhile Adobe is <a href=\"http:\/\/openaccess.thecvf.com\/content_cvpr_2018\/papers\/Oh_Fast_Video_Object_CVPR_2018_paper.pdf\">publishing their own research<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0showing how it might come soon (&#x1f91e;) to After Effects.
