Night Sight on Pixel 3 blows me away.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NewImage.png\" src=\"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/NewImage.png\" alt=\"NewImage\" width=\"599\" height=\"221\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>First, some important disclaimers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I work at Google\u00a0&amp; get to collaborate with the folks responsible for this tech, but I can take no credit for it, and these are just my opinions &amp; non-scientific findings.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m not here to rain on anybody\u2019s parade. My iPhone X is great, and the 70D has been a loyal workhorse. I have no plans to ditch either.<\/li>\n<li>The 70D came out in 2013, and it\u2019s obviously possible to get both a newer DSLR &amp; a lens faster than my 24-70mm f\/2.8.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s likewise possible to know a lot more about manual exposure than I do. I went only as far as to choose aperture priority, crank the exposure wide open, and set ISO to Auto.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having said all that, I think my results reasonably represent what a normal-to-semi-savvy person would get from the various devices. Here\u2019s what I saw:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pixel 3 vs. 70D shots (<a href=\"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/70D-NightSight-1.jpg\">set one<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/70D-NightSight-2.jpg\">set two<\/a>), all unedited. CR2 files from the 70D got converted to JPEG using default processing in Lightroom. In many cases the 70D struggled to focus (whereas the Pixel never did), so some of its shots are soft as well as dark.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSLR-Pixel-iPhone.jpg\">Pixel 3 vs. 70D vs. iPhone X shots<\/a>, all unedited.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Raw-adjusted-JPG.jpg\">70D raw default vs. Lightroom-adjusted vs. Pixel 3<\/a>. I tried to find the best balance I could between noise &amp; sharpness.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/photos.app.goo.gl\/XLMd4yAczVQnWFgC9\">Full gallery from the car show<\/a>. With a few subjects (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/photos.app.goo.gl\/HSZpoBHH9DXHytDB6\">this one<\/a>)\u00a0I tried taking an iPhone shot with default (auto) exposure, then one with exposure manually cranked up, and finally one with Pixel 3 Night Sight. <a href=\"https:\/\/photos.app.goo.gl\/jsZidy3ZNAMvEdoa6\">Here\u2019s another triplet<\/a>.
