(Anybody else remember <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creature_House_Expression\">Creature House Expression<\/a>, published by Fractal &amp; then acquired by Microsoft? Congrats on also being old! &#x1f643;) It\u2019s a tough line to walk, and the forthcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/theblog.adobe.com\/our-upcoming-drawing-and-painting-app-has-a-new-name-adobe-fresco\/\">Adobe Fresco<\/a> app is far from Adobe\u2019s first bite at the apple (<em>I<\/em> remember you, Fireworks).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"First Look at Adobe Fresco - Adobe&#039;s Drawing and Painting App | Adobe Creative Cloud\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3rydHqC9WtY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Back in 2010, I transitioned off of Photoshop proper &amp; laid out a plan by which different mobile apps\/modules (painting, drawing, photo library) would come together to populate a share, object-centric canvas. Rather than build the monolithic (and now forgotten) Photoshop Touch that we eventually shipped, I\u2019d advocated for letting Adobe Ideas form the drawing module, Lightroom Mobile form the library, and a new Photoshop-derived painting\/bitmap editor form the imaging module. We could do the whole thing on a new imaging stack optimized around mobile GPUs.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously that went about as well as conceptually related 90\u2019s-era attempts at OpenDoc et al.\u2014not because it\u2019s hard to combine disparate code modules (though it is!), but because it\u2019s&nbsp;<em>really<\/em> hard to herd cats across teams, and I am not Steve Fucking Jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, I\u2019ve learned, org charts&nbsp;<strong>do<\/strong>&nbsp;matter, insofar as they represent alignment of incentives &amp; rewards\u2014or lack thereof. \u201cIf you want to walk fast, walk alone; if you want to walk far, walk together.\u201d And everyone prefers \u201cinnovate\u201d vs. \u201cintegrate,\u201d and then for bonus points they can stay busy for years paying down the resulting technical debt. \u201c\u2026Profit!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But who knows\u2014maybe this time crossing the streams will work.
