I&#8217;d fooled with the primitive tools on Apple ][&#8216;s and a PCjr., but MacPaint was a whole new animal. At a friend&#8217;s birthday party in 1984, I laid eyes on their new Mac &amp; dumped my usual &#8220;plays well with others&#8221; schtick like a hot rock. This machine was the <i>stuff<\/i>, and the other kids weren&#8217;t gonna get close until I&#8217;d rocked out with MacPaint&#8217;s cool features (drawing a prison just so I could paintbucket the walls with the brick pattern). I&#8217;ve been hooked ever since.<\/p>\n<p>But who knew that the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marching_ants\">marching ants<\/a>&#8221; animation that denotes a selection in Photoshop and other applications comes from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hamm%27s_Beer_bear\">the Land of Sky-Blue Waters<\/a>? According to Folklore.org, MacPaint author &amp; Mac UI pioneer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billatkinson.com\/aboutTheArtist.html\">Bill Atkinson<\/a> was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.folklore.org\/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&amp;story=MacPaint_Evolution.txt\">inspired by a Hamm&#8217;s Beer sign<\/a>. Groovy. (Seems like rounded rectangles&#8211;always popular, overused in every era&#8211;have <a href=\"http:\/\/news.com.com\/Photos+Sketching+out+the+Mac+-+page+3\/2009-1041_3-6054444-3.html?tag=st.next\">always been with us<\/a>).
