{"id":15601,"date":"2008-11-03T21:46:42","date_gmt":"2008-11-03T21:46:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnackdev\/2008\/11\/pro-photographers-vote-lightroom.html"},"modified":"2008-11-03T21:46:42","modified_gmt":"2008-11-03T21:46:42","slug":"pro_photographers_vote_lightroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2008\/11\/03\/pro_photographers_vote_lightroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro Photographers Vote Lightroom!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">In the Red-Green-Blue state of professional digital photography, voters are going for Adobe Lightroom in a very big way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&#160;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">A year ago I <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnack\/2007\/10\/aperture_vs_lightroom.html\">shared some market research<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infotrends.com\/public\/home.html\">InfoTrends<\/a> that compared Lightroom usage among North American pros to that of Apple Aperture.&#160; This year InfoTrends asked the same questions, and here&#8217;s what they found photographers to be using: <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&#160;<\/p>\n<table width=\"422\" border=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td width=\"241\" valign=\"top\">&#160;<\/td>\n<td width=\"73\" valign=\"top\"><strong>2007<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"94\" valign=\"top\"><strong>2008<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td valign=\"top\">Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in <\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">66.5%<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">62.2%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td valign=\"top\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">Lightroom<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">23.6%<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">35.9%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td valign=\"top\">Aperture<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">5.5%<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">7.5%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td valign=\"top\">&#160;<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">&#160;<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">&#160;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td valign=\"top\">On the Mac platform only <\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">&#160;<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">&#160;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td valign=\"top\">Lightroom<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">26.6%<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">40.4%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td valign=\"top\">Aperture<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">14.3%<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">14.6%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&#160; <\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<\/p>\n<li>We&#8217;re delighted to see that Lightroom has <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">increased its market share among pros by 50%<\/span> on both Mac and Windows.<\/li>\n<li>Aperture&#8217;s overall number is up due to a greater percentage of respondents running Macs this year.&#160; On the Mac, however, its market share is essentially unchanged.<\/li>\n<li>The survey was fielded in June and July 2008, after the launch of Aperture 2 but before Lightroom 2 was released. <\/li>\n<li>Overall Photoshop usage remains over 90% in this market.&#160; Use of Camera Raw specifically has dipped a bit, which is to be expected as more pros embrace Lightroom.&#160; Even so, the numbers indicate that many people continue to use both paths depending on circumstances (e.g. opening a one-off image vs. browsing a whole shoot).&#160; That&#8217;s true in my work, and I find the compatibility of settings between LR &amp; ACR invaluable.<\/li>\n<li>Lightroom PM Tom Hogarty has posted <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/lightroomjournal\/2008\/11\/aperture_vs_lightroom_what_do.html\">a few additional details<\/a> about the survey on the Lightroom Journal blog. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&#160;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">As always the Lightroom &amp; Photoshop teams are grateful to the photography community for all their support, and we look forward to bringing the Lightroom mojo to more photographers in the years ahead. \n<\/p>\n<p>\n[Update: In case it was unclear, I&#8217;ll note that these percentages are not mutually exclusive.
