{"id":16665,"date":"2010-10-29T13:31:31","date_gmt":"2010-10-29T20:31:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnack\/?p=3078"},"modified":"2010-10-29T13:31:31","modified_gmt":"2010-10-29T20:31:31","slug":"photoshop-com-dreamweaver-add-html5-video-playback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/29\/photoshop-com-dreamweaver-add-html5-video-playback\/","title":{"rendered":"Photoshop.com, Dreamweaver add HTML5 video playback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve seen some requests for <a href=\"http:\/\/tv.adobe.com\/\">Adobe TV<\/a> to add HTML5 video playback support. \u00a0That&#8217;s indeed in the works, though I don&#8217;t have a schedule to share.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Adobe&#8217;s photo- and video-sharing site, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.Photoshop.com\">Photoshop.com<\/a>, has added HTML5 video support. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/dAfZjg\">random video<\/a>* you can check out on play on any device that supports Flash or H.264-encoded HTML5 video.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, the Dreamweaver team has released <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/dreamweaver\/2010\/10\/adobe-announces-the-html5-video-player-widget.html\">the HTML5 Video Player widget<\/a>. \u00a0The widget leverages both browser support &amp; Flash Player as needed to ensure playback:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Code generated from the widget plays video in the best possible player for the requested platform using a range of video codecs. Based on the Kaltura open source library, the HTML5 Video Player widget is fully cross-browser compatible with support for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Opera. [Update: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reelseo.com\/html-5-war-won-adobe-kaltura\/\">technical details here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have to say, all this <a href=\"http:\/\/macficionado.wordpress.com\/2010\/10\/27\/html5-sounds-the-death-knell-for-mobile-flash\/\">absurd<\/a> zero-sum &#8220;Flash vs. HTML5 video&#8221; stuff makes me laugh (which is better than making me angry, as it used to do).\u00a0\ufeff[Background:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnack\/2010\/03\/h264_isnt_an_alternative_to_flash.html\">H.264 isn\u2019t an alternative to Flash<\/a>]\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Flash is a big reason that H.264 is ascendant<\/strong>, because by serving H.264 video, publishers can reach 98% of desktop machines through Flash, and reach non-Flash-enabled devices via HTML5. \u00a0Do you think we&#8217;d see that uptake if the content were viewable by only the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.netmarketshare.com\/browser-market-share.aspx?qprid=0\">&lt;15%<\/a> that use Chrome or Safari? \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mefeedia.com\/html5-oct-2010\">&#8220;Flash remains the dominant player within desktop environments,&#8221;<\/a> and now viewers &amp; publishers have more choices about how to use video online. \u00a0That&#8217;s all good. \u00a0(Er, I mean, it&#8217;s all bad and Flash is doomed; sorry, I went off script there for a minute.)<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, you want to watch what you want, on whatever device you want.
