{"id":16769,"date":"2011-01-10T16:24:30","date_gmt":"2011-01-10T23:24:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnack\/?p=3498"},"modified":"2011-01-10T16:24:30","modified_gmt":"2011-01-10T23:24:30","slug":"gimme-pleasure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/10\/gimme-pleasure\/","title":{"rendered":"Gimme Pleasure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>John Gruber made an interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/daringfireball.net\/linked\/2011\/01\/05\/battelle-claim-chowder\">remark<\/a> the other day:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIn hindsight, I think the use cases for the original iPad are simplicity and delight.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This suggests that delight itself (the beautiful execution) <em>is<\/em> the feature, rather than merely a <em>characteristic<\/em> of a feature. \u00a0That is, I buy and use the iPad not to do things I couldn\u2019t otherwise do, but <em>for the pleasure<\/em> involved in doing those things.<\/p>\n<p>I find this point of view intriguing. \u00a0It gets at some of what I&#8217;ve had in mind for new Adobe mobile apps: that they should be about JOY, about pleasure&#8211;more\u00a0like games, maybe, than very sober, precise desktop tools one associates with Adobe.<\/p>\n<p>In a similar vein, Prerna Gupta, CEO of music startup Khush, writes that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2011\/01\/09\/pleasure-products-painkillers\/\">Not all Products Need To Be Painkillers<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to say today that Twitter solves the problem of dispersed information, or Facebook the problem of dispersed friends. But who thought of these as \u201cpain points\u201d back in 2004? I don\u2019t believe Twitter and Facebook are painkillers. Just ask yourself, Is \u201cacetaminophen\u201d really the drug you feel like you\u2019re on when you\u2019re using Twitter? Or does \u201cmethamphetamine\u201d sound more appropriate? [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>If you focus only on painkillers, you\u2019ll likely miss out on a completely different, and potentially much larger, set of opportunities: those that target pleasure. Pornography, sports and coffee are, for example, three insanely lucrative industries, and each of them sells the promise of pleasure.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Your desktop\/laptop already offers pain &amp; pain killers. So, in building new mobile apps, can we focus more on aphrodisiacs?
