{"id":18256,"date":"2013-07-01T12:05:01","date_gmt":"2013-07-01T19:05:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.adobe.com\/jnack\/?p=9514"},"modified":"2013-07-01T12:05:01","modified_gmt":"2013-07-01T19:05:01","slug":"no-words","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jnack.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/01\/no-words\/","title":{"rendered":"No words"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the NY Times, Nick Bilton <a href=\"http:\/\/bits.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/06\/30\/disruptions-social-media-images-form-a-new-language-online\/?_r=0\">talks<\/a> about photographs becoming a ubiquitous, disposable form of communication:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Photos, once slices of a moment in the past \u2014 sunsets, meetings with friends, the family vacation \u2014 are fast becoming an entirely new type of dialogue. The cutting-edge crowd is learning that communicating with a simple image, be it a picture of what\u2019s for dinner or a street sign that slyly indicates to a friend, \u201cHey, I\u2019m waiting for you,\u201d is easier than bothering with words, even in a world of hyper-abbreviated Twitter posts and texts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently text messaging is in (slight) decline, while SnapChat (y&#8217;know, self-destructing junk shots for the kids) is reputedly <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2013\/06\/22\/source-snapchat-snaps-up-80m-from-ivp-at-a-800m-valuation\/\">worth $800+ million<\/a>. This is the part where Old Man Nack officially feels he has no idea what&#8217;s going on.<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s got to be some great Orwell quote about losing the language to make sense of experiences, but, eh, who wants to <em>read<\/em> all that?<br \/>\nElsewhere Dave Pell <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/click-the-shutter\/d76bf316c4dc\">muses<\/a> about how imaging can separate us from experiences:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We\u2019ve ceded many of our remembering duties (birthdays, schedules, phone numbers, directions) to a hard drive in the cloud. And to a large extent, we\u2019ve now handed over our memories of experiences to digital cameras. [&#8230;]<br \/>\nWe no longer take any time to create an internal memory of an event or an experience before seeing, filtering, and sharing a digital version of it. We remember the photo, not the moment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a world of social media, we can all exist in a droll, above-it-all sugary crust (like Seinfeld <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/album\/cab-drivers\/id5802123?i=5802083\">talking<\/a> about how in a cab, everything on the other side of the plexiglass, no matter how dangerous, is amusing &#038; unreal).
