The University of Notre Dame's student-run newspaper published an accurate, grammatical news item on Friday, marking the first time in over a decade that such an event has taken place.
"We're obviously very pleased," said Brad Prendergast, editor in chief of the Observer. "This is something we can build on for the future, as journalists and students."
However, Prendergast was quick to downplay the overall significance of the article, which, he said, "is not as important as our other goals, like running a GLND/SMC article every day for the next twenty years and running a lot of Kathy Schiebel columns."
The article, headlined, "Stanford Hall defeats Keenan Hall in IH football," was a crisp 85 words. The article contained no misspellings, obvious grammatical mistakes or factual inaccuracies. The score of the game and the names of the key players involved were all correctly reported.
Stephanie Richardson, a Saint Mary's student and author of the article was ecstatic.
"It's like, you know, no one ever did that here before, so I feel this can really help me stop the persecution of Saint Mary's really soon. I'm very happy about that and I like being in a story about me instead of just writing stories about football."
A promotion was not far away, according to Richardson.
"Brad says I can have my own desk in the office soon and he promised it would be close to his, so he could use me as, you know, like a dictionary for him I guess."
