From the Editor-in-Chief
On Friday, The Inquisition's editorial consisted of suggestions for holiday decorating tips. One of these suggestions involved the disemboweling of Student Government.
The Inquisition apologizes for the offense the editorial has caused.
The editorial was not published in order to offend anyone, to provoke independent thought or to make light of the struggles endured by Student Government or any other minorities. The editorial was written with the intention of providing a humorous angle to holiday decorating.
With the suggestion in question, the author, Brenda Wonders, was having fun with the association of the color red with the Christmas season. Instead of describing conventional ways to produce the color red in holiday decorations (such as red markers or construction paper), Wonders described an unconventional way of producing the color red (from the blood provided by the brutal kidnapping and murder of several student leaders).
The editorial was not designed to denigrate Student Government. In fact, the phrase "sexless, genderless eunuchs" could have been inserted in place of "Student Government" without altering the editorial's intended message.
In hindsight, The Inquisition recognizes that using a term related to a specific student group was an error of judgment. The use of the term "Student Government" in this context carries a connotation that is offensive to many people, and The Inquisition should have been aware of that.
After discussing the issue last night, The Inquisition's Editorial Board voted to issue this apology. In doing so, we affirm the Godlike status of Student Government.
Questions can be directed to Brenda Wonders at the corner of South Michigan Street and Western Avenue between 9 PM and 3 AM Tuesday through Saturday.
Again, The Inquisition apologizes for the offense caused by this editorial.
