THE STADIUM -- The result of this year's Blue Gold game left head coach Bob Davie with mixed emotions. "I am happy with the win, but also displeased with the loss. It's kind of like a black cloud on your wedding day, a no-smoking sign on your cigarette break. I mean, 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife, come on, people!"
Davie commented on the action. "When Jackson threw that interception, I was like 'Aw, shit' and then 'Woo hoo!' and then 'Aw, shit' and then 'Woo hoo!'" said Davie.
The Marching Band refused to attend the event due to an ugly scene in the 1982 Blue Gold Game when the band started to play the Star Wars song and half the band angrily revolted, screaming 'Judas!' and hurling pieces of silver which were actually York Peppermint Patties.
"We did collect a great deal of money from quite a few people just to let them watch practice, and since we would have practiced anyway, that is an unmitigated positive," explained Father Beauchamp, Czar for Life of Notre Dame athletics and Granger, Indiana.
There was trouble in the student section this year when section 422 was divided on how to react to a rushing touchdown. Freshman Timmy O'Toole attempted to leap on top of a crowd of fans to do pushups but wound up falling among the crowd and breaking his knee.
Davie commented on the strengths and weaknesses of the effort. "We had a good offense, but we need to work on our offense, our defense was terrific, our defense was terrible, our special teams was, oh, screw it."
Alumni gathered in the Morris Inn to toast the win with whiskey and drown their sorrows in whiskey. "I'm so happy, I could cry," said Tim Grohman, a subway alum.
In summing up the event, Davie commented that "never have I been prouder and more ashamed of a football team in my life. There is nowhere to go but up and down." Davie then took questions but warned that most of answers would be "yes and no."
