The Campus Life Council decided last night to set up a special committee that will examine the bylaws and goals of the special committee.
The committee cannot actually change the bylaws and purposes of itself, or hold any meetings. The bylaws can only be changed by Student Body President Peter Cesaro.
But the committee will be charged with trying to find ways to improve itself that can be posted on a bulletin board in the office of Student Government.
Paramount concerns for the new comittee will include:
- --Changing membership and by-laws in a proactive, not a reactive, manner.
- --Figuring out if "Student Government" means real government of students or "play government."
- --Expressing sadness and concern at the University's failure to respond to a committe which has existed for two whole weeks and toward which "several" student senators have devoted time.
| "The Student Senate, the HPC and all other aspects of campus government have been redefined in the past year," argued a drunken alumnus who had somehow wandered into the meeting. "This committee is still operating under a mission statement and bylaws that have not changed since the committee was formed five minutes ago."
Committee volunteer Melanie Bean warned that "this is a pregnant issue we are getting into. It suffers from morning sickness and has a craving for pickles. There are a lot of people out there with CLC experience. They will be no help to us whatsoever. I think we have to ask Patty O'Hara if this is what we are here for. Are we just for show or do we have a greater purpose, undiscovered by any CLC member to date and available only in ancient Aramaic? It is worth looking into."
"It's just for show," said O'Hara.
Keough Hall senator Michael Pantaloon asked that the committe also look into the possibility of updating itself on a monthly basis. "We looked into creating a separate committee on that issue, but we got tired and decided to go home."
