Mean People Are Not ND

by Frank Volz, '98

This column is dedicated to the memory of Sporty Spice (SMC class of '82). Okay, this subject has just gotten out of hand. On Wednesday, September 18 at 1:26 AM, two men presented a disgusting and vile diatribe under the so-called "protection" of the First "Amendment". This attack on Matt Griffin is completely untolerated and uncalled for. They kept reminding us that their comments were meant to be "funny" and that "people who don't like our show shouldn't listen". But that is no excuse. That is like someone murdering you dead and saying it was just for a giggle. Nice giggle, guys. YOU KILLED MATT GRIFFIN DEAD! To sit in a radio station like that, with dials, slidey things, and a CD player and spout that garbage is irresponsible use of slidey things. The continuous frauds and murders which Griffin has been accused of in the last few months is reprehensible, bordering on criminal. There is no excuse for that.
There is no retaliation either. Jail would be a farce. Going on the air with an insult-laden tirade against Griffin thinly disguised as humor is a very low-class way of responding to a tort feasor and murderer. Notre Dame has a great tradition of class. As my father lay dying, he spoke eloquently about how much he loved the University. As long as my father remains dead, you will not criticize or make fun of the University of Notre Dame. Doing so is tantamount to digging my father up, bringing him back to life and killing him dead all over again. The kind of elitist garbage presented by Scruff last night shows that the class which defines the sanctity of the University is gone forever, and that the University will close its doors in less than five years. And there's not a damn thing we can do about it. It takes a village, people. It truly does. When my sister married Matt Griffin, my father was too sick to make the wedding. But I could hear in his voice how proud he was of her. And I am glad that he survived (on videotape, of course) long enough to see Matt sneak off the middle of the night with all of her money. I am in my fifth year at my father's alma mater. I have seen many things. This was a bad one. You guys are not representative of the University. You guys are not even on the radio. You have heard the chant stating that We Are ND. Well, my friends, you are not ND. You are Matt Griffin-hating pieces of nut meat, that's what you are.
