“Sure, it costs as much as 47 Canon 5D MK IIs,” writes Uncrate,” but you’d need nearly that many — configured in some sort of crazy, Matrix-like setup — to match the unbelievable 1,052 fps high-speed 1080p recording of the Phantom HD Camera ($118,000).”
I have no idea what’s going on here, but I like it:
Oh, and it’s good for capturing dogs jumping at 1000fps. [Via]
Cool video!
Of course, if you want REAL speed you need a streak camera. Hamamatsu has a model that can get down to 200 femtosecond temporal resolution. Sure, it’s not something you take camping to document your illegal rocket experiments, but still… fast is fast 😉
[Just for the record, my camping trips involve *legal* explosives experiments. 🙂 –J.]
Very cool. You may also want to check out the new Visa Black Card commercial (www.blackcard.com) produced by Brain Farm Cinema (http://brainfarmcinema.com/). Several shots in the commercial were done with the Phanton HD.
What’s notable about this camera is not necessarily it’s speed, but it’s speed AND resolution.
Phantom cameras are routinely used in research, going up to 100-200k fps. But the image size is silly, like 64×64 or 128×128.
