What a totally cool project:
Historypin uses Google Maps and Street View technology and hopes to become the largest user-generated archive of the world’s historical images and stories.
Historypin asks the public to dig out, upload and pin their own old photos, as well as the stories behind them, onto the Historypin map. Uniquely, Historypin lets you layer old images onto modern Street View scenes, giving a series of peeks into the past.
Cool idea, particularly when done on mobile with GPS… would be great to travel a town and see synch’d historic photos.
But they’d still need to weed out submitted photos which are actually ads for Viagra, politians, musicians or colognes…. 🙁

Given some time to dig out the old photos and sort through them, I think this project will be a hit!
Looks really interesting, especially from this preservationist/cartographer’s perspective. But that video makes the actual interface feel instantly disappointing. Some day…
