Camera Raw 4.1 announced, due shortly

As you may have seen already, Adobe has announced Camera Raw 4.1, due to be available shortly via Adobe.com.  (The communication got out a little ahead of the actual plug-in, which should be posted in the next 24 hours or so.)

Camera Raw 4.1 adds support for 13 new digital cameras and backs, including the Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro, Nikon D40x, Olympus E-410, Olympus SP-550 UZ, Sigma SD14, Phase One H 20, Phase One H 25, Phase One P 20, Phase One P 21, Phase One P 25, Phase One P 30 and Phase One P 45.

In addition, Camera Raw includes some very cool enhancements to sharpening & noise reduction.  I’ll share more details on these shortly; in the meantime, here’s a teaser screenshot.  (By the way, all the same controls will be coming to Lightroom soon, too.)

  1. What I would really like is for Adobe to fix what for me is a completely broken Photoshop CS 3.
On a clean XP Pro install that has a minimum number of applications, including PS CS2, Acrobat 7 pro, Office 2003, PS CS 3 Trial version (Why is the trial version PS CS 3 Extended when what I want to test is PS CS 3?) is crashing, on average every ten minutes…I try to save a file, it crashes, I try to paint, a mask it crashes, I try to convert from 16 to 8 Bit, it crashes…
[That’s really bizarre. Sorry to hear about these problems. They’re not typical of what I’m hearing. –J.]
PS CS 2 is working as it should…
I know that there are posting on Forums that point to PS CS3’s inherent instability…
Is there anything that you know that we should know?
[No. Rather, we need to know more from you. I’ll ask QE to follow up with you. –J.]

  2. Looks great, and it seems there is an update to lightroom on the works, at least from your last comment! I hope so, LR is my fave software. Could be improved in some basic areas, it is slowish with a dual core at 2.1GHZ and 2 gigs of mem (takes a big chunk of the available memory) and if you let it run for long (say go to make a cup of tea and come back to work a while later) it has increased the amount of mem is taking so if you shut it, it releases the mem chunk slowly. It needs a better way to identify versions, the naming convention is a bit weird, not clear (if you go out to PS and stack it with the original, the resulting tiff I mean) also it sort of changes the order of the versions as you work on them (you loose track of the one you were working on and such) and give me free dragging like in bridge 3 (similar to aperture light table, and allow me to move images about , cluster them and tag them as clusters in the the light table. Raw 4.1 will be a welcomed addition to an already great software!

  3. I’m guessing “clarity” is a gray component replacement tool.
Not sure of the real value of more sophisticated sharpening in ACR. I only do a slight capture sharpen in ACR (if I sharpen at all) and I’m not sure how much better that job can be done with masking. More advanced noise reduction would be great at conversion level, on the other hand.

  4. Hi:
Camera Raw 4.1 (the latest upgrade)does not support Phase One P 45+ (the plus model). Yesterday I was trying out this model (P45+) and Camera Raw 4.1. does not support this Phase One Model. Do you know when will this model be supported? (I work with Lightroom.)
