Ugh. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the Lightroom team has uncovered some problems with the Lightroom 1.4 and Camera Raw 4.4 releases posted on Thursday. The updates have been pulled down temporarily while the team addresses the problems. In the meantime Lightroom PM Tom Hogarty has posted details and guidance on how to roll back to previous versions. The most serious issue is that the time stamp generated by your camera & stored in EXIF metadata can get overwritten when you update other file metadata.
On behalf of everyone involved, I’m sorry about all this hassle. We’ll straighten things out ASAP.
[Update: Tom has posted an apology.]
As I mentioned in Tom’s blog, this should not take away from your great work at Adobe. Mistakes happen, you guys are still giving us the best and working with us on the way, thanks!
I saw this on the LR forums last night. At least they (Tom H) read the user forums and were able to admit the problem and take steps (as opposed to corporate silence).
It’s always good to see that humans work for Adobe. As a human myself, it was foolish to install the 1.4 update without waiting my usual 5 days of forum reading. But why are YOU sorry? Do you work on LR, too?
[I don’t, but I work on Photoshop, which contains ACR. I’m also Catholic, so I generally feel bad about everything. 😉 –J.]
John
It’s disappointing they found these problems after they released the update. Very Bad Form.
[Clearly. –J.]
LOL on the Catholic guilt trip. Being a human and a Catholic m’self, I know whence you speak.
Don
Speaking of Catholic, my wife is the token protestant working for the Archdiocese in our hometown.
Go to http://www.photoky.com and see some photoshoped Catholic church I photographed. This was done in memory of easter this week and all the good works my catholic brothers have done.
Affectionately Photoshop user,

Can we get a little more detail on the rollback? At the linked location it shows how to uninstall LR 1.4 but not how to get back to LR 1.3. I’ve updated to LR 1.4 on several machines and am concerned I’ll have messed up my work if I’m not on LR 1.3. Tell me it ain’t so! I need LR support for an upcoming photoshoot, so a link to good guidance on this would be wonderful news.
OK, so I read the bad news about the update earlier… and I tried to reinstall Lightroom 1.3, and it wouldn’t because I had the “newer” version on my computer… so I threw the “newer” version in the trash, then tried to install 1.3… and my computer is mysteriously still seeing the newer version. Great! I can’t use Lightroom for my editing! Now’s a perfect time to peak over at Aperture, I guess…
Tom: Tom Hogarty clearly posted the instructions to remove Lr 1.4 in a Mac:
Mac: Delete the Lightroom application in the Application folder(Mac) and Delete the following file: Library/Receipts/Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.pkg”
Petra & Tom, there’s rollback instructions at http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b4affd
If you’re still having trouble, drop by the U2U forums http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc2cf0a/?@780.sAVNgdrgZi1@ or Lightroom Forums http://www.lightroomforums.net
[Thanks for the details, Victoria. I don’t speak for the Lightroom team, but I do feel compelled to note that it’s not as if one’s computer is going to catch on fire if you *don’t* roll back the version of LR. The risk is only to the timestamps in your EXIF data, not to your images, edits, etc. That’s not to say there isn’t a real problem here, but I do want people to know the scope of the issue before engaging in a fire drill to roll back versions. –J.]
The problem includes Camera RAW 4.4? I’m asking because you can download it unlike Lightroom. Thanks for this blog.
