I do not think those portraits are awful. Actually, I like them a lot.
How do you approach taking a self-portrait? With humor and self-deprecation. Otherwise, you look like a self-important, pompous jerk. Make people lough with you, not at you. That was always my motto.

They were pretty interesting and I think fairly original in a world that is deluged with images. (Thanks Adobe!)
I agree with Rob. What’s so awful or cheesy about them? The guy is really good at portraying a lot of very different characters and i hardly see any “cheesiness” there.
