Photography: Deliberately horrible self portraits

“For the past five years,” writes the Daily Mail, “photographer and adjunct professor at Virginia Commonwealth University Gordon Stettinius has been sending intentionally awful portraits of himself dressed as one of more than two dozen creepy-looking characters, as follow-ups to industry professionals.”

  1. I do not think those portraits are awful. Actually, I like them a lot.
How do you approach taking a self-portrait? With humor and self-deprecation. Otherwise, you look like a self-important, pompous jerk. Make people lough with you, not at you. That was always my motto.

  2. @Rob – But then it is the Daily Mail stating what is taste!
They were pretty interesting and I think fairly original in a world that is deluged with images. (Thanks Adobe!)

  3. I agree with Rob. What’s so awful or cheesy about them? The guy is really good at portraying a lot of very different characters and i hardly see any “cheesiness” there.
