[Update June 2, 2007: If you’re here because you’re trying to rip us off by somehow stealing Photoshop (via serial number, keygen, crack, etc.), keep moving; you’ll get no satisfaction here. Adios. –J.]
I’m pleased to report that we’ve just posted the Photoshop 9.0.1 updater for Photoshop CS2 (Mac/Win). In addition to addressing a crummy PDF offset bug, this release means that:
- After editing an image in Photoshop CS2 via Acrobat Touchup, the image no longer gets re-positioned.
- Photoshop no longer hangs for several seconds when using painting tools with quick strokes.
- A program error that could appear when mousing over high res doc with Brush Tool has been fixed.
- Documents containing a large number of text layers now open more quickly.
- An error that could cause a crash on Mac when launching, or when opening or saving a file, has been addressed.
- Problems related to palettes on Windows (slow redraw, palettes go white, possible crash) have been addressed.
- TIFF files from certain scanners can now be opened correctly.
- XMP metadata from AI & PDF files is now retained in Photoshop.
- Slow performance when toggling layer visibility has been fixed.
- Info palette numbers now display and update when moving a curve point in Curves via the cursor keys.
- Problems opening certain TIFF and PSB files greater than 2GB in size have been resolved.
- The Merge to HDR command now functions properly when using high-ASCII characters in user login.
Dot releases (updates) like this are much like detention in high school–a kind of penalty box that keeps you away from what you really want to be doing (building the Next Great Transformative Thing and all). They’re also a drag since cracking open the shipping app brings a risk of breaking something else, so quite a few testing cycles go into making sure everything is solid. In any case, we hope you weren’t experiencing any static with CS2 thus far, and if you were, this update should set things right.
[Update: As probably wasn’t clear enough in the last paragraph, I was going for humor, not whining. Fixing bugs that have been hurting customers is clearly the right thing to do, and we’re glad to have taken the time to do this update. (And again, sorry we didn’t catch these problems before shipping.) I just don’t like the idea that dot releases are an expected fact of life, and that one shouldn’t buy or use a product until after a first dot release, service pack, etc. has been issued. The goal of any developer should obviously be to avoid the need for a bug-fix update.]
Hah, and to think I was just saying earlier this morning about how there were no CS2 updates yet. I find that funny.
Awesome!
It may feel like detention to you guys but it’s such a relief to users when an update fixes a problem thats been plaguing them in their daily work *cough*slowlayertoggling*cough*. It shows that you guys are aware of the problems and have an interest in getting it right. So don’t feel like a dot release is holding you back too much. Recognizing and fixing the problems earns user respect. Its better than having to wait for the next full release and hope that “they’ve fixed it” 😉
[Scott–we totally agree. My point was just that dots are no fun, but it’s essential to get things right before moving on to whatever’s next. –J.]
Nice, now instead of getting bogged down with actual work I can simply sit here and marvel at the fact that every operation I try to perform results in a completely irrelevant “program error” dialog. Can’t wait to reinstall everything from scratch to undo whatever damage this updater did. Somebody in QA needs some help with their matrices.
[Nathan, the results you report are not typical of what we’re hearing elsewhere. If possible I’d like to have our testers follow up with you directly to diagnose what you’re seeing. –Thanks, J.]
The life of the maintenance coder is indeed a tedious one, and I don’t even want to think about how much work it’s going to take to convert those legacy CW projects to XCode, but given the number of bugs I’ve personally encountered in shipping CS2 code (most of which aren’t even addressed in this update) I think Adobe engineers would do well to adopt a slightly less crybabyish attitude toward getting bug fix updates into the hands of their customers. It’s not “detention”, it’s your job; just because it isn’t always fun doesn’t mean carelessness is justifiable, especially not at this price point.
The tone of the article about this
update makes you suspicious as to whether to do this update.
I mean is this an update or a “update only if you are having problems”?
First impressions so far: the 0.1 update seems to be an improvement – I’ll have to test it a bit more this week to know for sure.
Thanks for the update! You said “Photoshop no longer hangs for several seconds when using painting tools with quick strokes.”
Does this mean that the Disable VM Buffering plug-in is no longer needed for Mac with greater than 4GB of RAM? I’ve got 8 GB and was seeing the brush-stroke hangup a lot.
[Andrew, I’m told that the issues are unrelated. That is, you’ll still want to experiment with the Disable VM Buffering plug-in on your system. –J.]
Yeah I can now Finaly buy Photoshop CS 2.0 (9.0.1)!!
I didn’t take exception to either the words or the tone of your detention analogy. I took it to mean that the necessity for maintenance is wasted effort that would not result if things had been done right to begin with. Unfortunately the reality of coding is that things will always be done somewhat wrong the first time. It’s a great product despite the inevitable bugs.
[Thanks, Ed. –J.]
I still can’t drag the Eyedropper tool and sample a color from any part of the desktop. The correct color appears under the pointer but as soon as I let go, the color reverts back to another color (not the previous foreground color). If I drag to another Photoshop document and deftly double-click, I can sample the color. Worked just fine in Photoshop CS.
When I try to run this update, I get the error saying “This program is not compatible with the version of WINDOWS you are running. Please check your documentation.” Well, I’m running Windows XP Pro. Why would I get an error like this? Has anyone else gotten this error?
Thanks,
Gina
When will Adobe make fix for 10.4.6 issue?
text bug!!!!
has trouble holding font info for a text layer. cannot complete an operation… must close app and restart. pants!
MAJOR text bug. This is very frustrating. Layer doesn’t hold text copied from another program such as text or word. Please fix this immediately. VERY difficult to work with.
9.0.1 did NOT fix this CS2 change/bug: Cannot fully utilize the keyboard to access the menus. For example, in CS1–and prior–you could access the unsharp mask filter by keying ALT-T, S, U. ALT-T still activates the Filter menu, but typing S (or any other letter) after that simply deactivates the menu. [OS is Windows XP SP2.]
As a 15-year photoshop veteran who actually prefers Windows because of the speed of these types of built-in OS shortcuts, this is very frustrating.
I hope this is something Adobe will address soon!
To be fair, the Mac also provides hundreds of little “shortcuts” that save the user time in any one session. For example, I can clear my desk by pressing one key or tile all open application windows. Over the course of a day, that can save a lot of time and frustration.
As for your problem, typing Alt-T, S,U seems awfully long winded to me. Why not use Keyboard Shortcuts to assign keys to most frequently used filters? For example, Ctrl+Shift+R to open Unsharp Mask, or Smart Sharpen. Alternatively, create actions and assign a single F key.
Please tell me where I can download update for Photoshop CS2 (9.0.1) ?
[Try http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/ –J.]

[How did you lose the serial number? If you have proof of purchase, call customer support or visit http://www.adobe.com/support/ and they’ll be glad to hook you up. –J.]

[You don’t need a serial number for the trial. You need one to actually *own* the software, and you can bet I’m not going to go passing those out! –J.]

[Please contact customer support with your tale of woe. –J.]
I bought the upgrade for CS2, and installed it on my desktop.
I then decided to install it on my laptop. My Toshiba Portage doesn’t have a CD drive and as I didn’t have Photoshop previously installed, it won’t accept the serial number.
I sent an e-mail to Adobe support, but didn’t get any answer. I’m a bit disappointed.
[Lawrence, you should be able simply to supply your older serial number in the installer dialog box, alongside the new one. There’s no need to have a previous version actually installed on that machine. –J.]
How are you supposed to know your serial number? I can’t install mine without it, and unfortunately I do not know what it is.
[Please consult this page. –J.]
When i want to start free trail it says that i must type serial number but tehre is free trial!!!1
When i want to start free trail it says that i must type serial number but tehre is free trial!!!1
[It’s “Try & Buy” software. That is, you can try it out, and if you like it you can purchase a serial number, enter it, and be good to go. That’s why it asks you what you want to do. –J.]

When I try to install the free 30-day trial version of Photoshop on my computer, it keeps on saying that I need a to enter a serial number. I don’t want to own the product, I just want to try it out for 30 days.
[The app gives you the choice to hit “Try” or to enter a serial number. –J.]]
I rec’d a pop up notice over internet to update Adobe which would automatically throw out unnessary things which would conflict in future.I downloaded and it automatically installed. Did I get a virus? Cause Photoshop CS2 no longer works good resolution with the scanner of my Brother All-In-One Color Laser. Plus the software will not separately resize one selected image while another file image is open. They both get enlarged at the same time.I have to close the one file. Enlarge the other selected image the corresponding percentage, re-open the other file to past the selected image into it.
[I’m not sure what you downloaded, or what’s going on. When you talk about resizing images, do you mean actually changing their dimensions, or just zooming in/out? If it’s the latter, try unchecking the “Zoom All Windows” option in the options bar. –J.]
Excuse, excuse, fib, fib, manipulate and lie. I need a legacy serial number for a copy of PS 7.0 that I have gotten. Please help if you can. Thanks CluelessThievingNumbskull@aol.com
[Thanks for the laugh, however unintentional. –J.]
hey ya yo!
Does anyone know if it’s possible to save back to cs1 from cs2?
[Yes, of course, just as it has been in every version of Photoshop. –J.]
in photoshop… what a joke… every other program allows you do this.. but I have yet to figure this out for photoshop CS2.. kudo’s to adobe for the offensive marketing tactic… right up their with planned obscelesence..
[Whatever. Thanks for not even trying to get your story straight before going off. –J.]
