Late last week, customers began reporting that once they’d applied Apple’s QuickTime 7.1 update, they were unable to install Photoshop or the Creative Suite on Mactel systems. Apple and Adobe engineers have been working together* since then to diagnose the problem.
The tech docs for the installer freeze and activation failure are being pushed live now and may not yet be available, so in the meantime, here’s some key info:
Topic title:
Photoshop CS2 installation freezes Intel-based Mac
When you install Photoshop CS2 on an Intel-based Mac with the QuickTime 7.1 update installed, your Mac freezes. Apple is working on a QuickTime fix. Until it’s available, use the following solution, or contact Apple at 1-800-APLCARE (in North America) or go to http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html for a list of international Apple support phone numbers.
- Restart the Macintosh and hold down the Shift key immediately after you hear the chimes.
- Release the Shift key when the Apple logo appears. When the Macintosh is in Safe Boot mode, the words Safe Boot appear on the logo.
- Insert your Mac OS system CD and perform an Archive and Install of OS 10.4.x, and select the option to Preserve Users and Network Settings. For instructions, see the documentation that came with your Apple computer, or contact Apple.
- Reboot the computer in normal mode. Note: Do not install the QuickTime 7.1 update.
- Install Photoshop
Obviously this approach isn’t ideal, and if you can sit tight, Apple should have an update ready soon. We’ll post more info as soon as it’s available.
Thanks for your patience,
J.
* Sorry, conspiracy wingnuts: Apple and Adobe are on the same side & closely collaborate on these things. The truth bores sometimes, I know.
Thanks for the info John. I just purchased CS2 last Thursday, and was really frustrated not being able to installl it.
“Reinstall the OS”, as you mention, isnt really a viable solution for many of us, hopefully an update will be out shortly.
What I ended up doing was installing the downloadable trial for it – hopefully a fix will be out within 30 days so I can go ahead and install the full version.
FYI – It appears the links to the tech docs are invalid (“Page not found”)
I also had trouble with installing my new suite. Please keep me updated when the new solution is found. Thanks
[Hang in there; it shouldn’t be much longer (really). –J.]
an easier AND faster way is to use Pacifist to install an older version of quicktime over QT 7.1, you’ll grow old waiting for apple to come out with an uninstaller…
[Actually, you won’t: see http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/mac.html –J.]
that’s just an update, i still don’t see a unstaller for QT 7.1…there’s no mention if it deals with java based applications as there was a conflict with QT 7.1 and the Kodak ProoferClient…
I’m glad I found this! Same thing just happened to me last night on my brand new MacBook. It wasn’t responding to any input at all after restarting. I was afraid that my laptop was already busted.
Luckily, I just reinstalled OSX over it and it worked fine afterwards.
After resintallying OSX, I noticed that Photoshop and Imageready were installed, but not the rest of the suite. PS seems to be working just fine though.
I had the same issue, would not install on my MBP 2 so I DL-ed the trial, installed it. Then popped in he CS2 CD and installed that on top. I entered my key code in p[lace of the try out info and it installed!
I’m trying to install Creative suite over Photoshop CS2 & illustrator CS2 tryout versions.
Installation doesn’t freeze but after entering my serial number, installaion terminates – informing me that i need to uninstall the tryout versions.
Same thing happens after i unnstall the tryout versions…
[Strange. I would suggest giving tech support a call. –J.]
Turns out you have to delete all adobe (tryout version) files before installing full versions (including the ones in the trash bin).
Everything is working nicely now.
i tried installing adobe photoshope cs2 for windows xp and it keeps saying the username and serial number fields are required for setup. i dont know the serial code or username
[I’ll bet you don’t. Genius… –J.]
I’m trying to install photoshop CS4 extended but as it starts to install ,it says “Please insert photoshop cs4 into drive G:\ to continue installation”
