Updates posted for Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom, ACR

I’m pleased to announce that Adobe has posted updates to Photoshop CS3 (download 10.0.1 for Mac, Win), Bridge CS3 (2.1.1 for Mac, Win), Camera Raw (4.3 for Mac, Win), and Lightroom (1.3 for Mac, Win).  Each download page contains details about the corresponding update, but I’ll hit some key points here.

[Update: Note that you can choose Help->Updates from within the apps in order to download and install the updates.  That’s actually the easiest way to go.]

The Photoshop 10.0.1 update addresses the key pain points experienced by users printing from CS3, particularly on Windows.  I’ve posted a separate note that goes into more detail on the topic. The update also includes better support for preserving XMP metadata (including copyright) via Save For Web, through the inclusion of a new
“Include XMP” option in the dialog’s settings menu.  The Photoshop update does not address a problem with changing the values for various tools on Mac OS X Leopard, but Apple and Adobe are working together on a separate fix (details).

With Bridge 2.1.1, a new preference to enable High Quality Preview has been added to Bridge’s Preferences->Advanced panel. When enabled, the preference addresses the problem of a soft or blurry preview appearing in the Preview panel and in Slideshow mode.  The Bridge update also remedies other problems reported by users, including
a problem that could cause Bridge to lock up when using arrow keys to navigate.

Lightroom 1.3 improves compatibility with Mac OS X Leopard, fixes some bugs, and adds an option to render 1:1 previews during import.  New cameras supported in Lightroom, Camera Raw, and the DNG Converter include the following: Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III, Canon PowerShot G9, Nikon D3, Nikon D300, Olympus E-3, Olympus SP-560 UZ, and Panasonic DMC-L10.  The applications also now support the sRAW format produced by the Canon 1D Mk III, 1Ds Mk III, and 40D.

There’s also a preview Lightroom Export SDK available for developers on Adobe Labs.  If that sounds interesting, check out what Lightroom PM Tom Hogarty has to say on the Lightroom Journal.

By the way, in case you’re wondering why the download size for the Photoshop update is large, it’s because the updater is multi-lingual, and on the Mac side the update is Universal Binary.

  1. John, the URL in “‘ve posted a separate note that goes…” doesn’t appear to work. Could you please check? Regards, Roland

  2. When opening Lightroom 1.2 today, I received a message reading: Upgrade to version 1.3; following the link, I was directed to an “update”; now, that I’ve downloaded that, it says “1.1”. What’s this about? Where is “1.3”?
(BTW: I had major issues with Lightroom after upgrading from Mac OS 1.4 to 1.5…)

  3. Why in the world do updaters always want to update when you START a program? Nothing is more frustrating that needing to get something done quickly and having to wade through dialogs by the updaters. If there was an option to “Update and Quit” that I could just leave to do its business, I know that I would update a lot more often and be less tempted to turn auto-updating off.

  4. Does the update do anything with the stability of PS CS 3 under windows? I have had it crashing A LOT. Re-sizing large images. Dragging objects onto new layers.
Never had any issues like this before CS 3.

  5. None of the update links seem to be working properly. The update links return you to the main index page in an endless loop or direct you to the 1.1 update.
    Any ideas as to why?
[I don’t know, but I continue to get reports like this–all from Europe, it seems. Maybe something with the download replication network is screwed up. I’m investigating. In the meantime, please try going into Photoshop, then choosing Help->Updates. You should be able to get all the bits that way. –J.]

  6. I’m another European (UK) user for whom none of the update links work, but thanks for the tip about going through Photoshop to get them. That works, except for Lightroom. Still unable to get that one over here.

  7. I’m in Norway, and have also gotten these non-working links all day. There’s probably some weird webpage caching occuring somewhere in the fat pipes between Europe and the US. The links will most likely work in 12-24 hours.

  8. Hi John,
Maybe this helps you pinpoint the problem:
in LR, when I select ‘Help->Update’ I get this page in FF:
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads/?notFoundID=null
When I click ‘Update’ there, I get http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
It has the LR 1.3 update right on top.
    But: when I click ‘English/windows’ there I get a screen (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=113&platform=Windows)
which DOES show the V1.1 and V1.2 downloads but not (yet) V1.3.
Hope this helps – best regards,
    Ed

  9. I managed to get the download from Spain.
Just get the link using a google search like “Adobe Bridge cs3 2.1.1”. Then instead of clicking in the link use the translate page link available when you use a non English Google (for example spanish one http://www.google.es)
This worked for me as probably google uses a server in the usa to acces the site to translate.
This is the link to the translated site wich allows you to downalod from europe
    http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=es&sl=en&u=http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp%3FftpID%3D3814&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=1&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dbridge_2_1_1.exe%26hl%3Des%26sa%3DG

  10. Lightroom updates (1.3)
    Windows: http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/lightroom/win/1.x/LTRM_WWEFG_win_1_3.exe
    Mac:
    http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/lightroom/mac/1.x/LTRM_WWEFG_mac_1_3.dmg
Both links work for me – downloading from Germany.
    Greetings
    Mirko
[Thanks for the links, and to everyone who has provided status/suggestions. I’m passing everything along to the Web team. It’s important that we figure out what’s going on so that the problems don’t keep coming up. –J.]

  11. 12-24 hours later, links are still not working in Norway. πŸ˜‰ Ah well, I’ve got better things to do in the weekend anyway. πŸ™‚
[Maybe we’re just secretly working to get folks out of the house. πŸ˜‰ –J.]
Thanks, John, for keeping us posted about the goings on in the Adobe world – it’s really appreciated.
[Sure, my pleasure; thanks for checking it out. –J.]

  12. I just downloaded and installed LR 1.3 (Win) using Mirko’s URL. Thanks Mirko!
John: thanks for keeping us informed – and for your blog in general. And good luck to the Web team, I hope they can figure out what happened.
    Regards,
    Ed

  13. Hi John,
I don’t really like to do some bug reporting, as your blog has also pointed very beautiful and interesting things out to me, but on this subject I do have something to mention.
I’m currently downloading all updates using Adobe Updater on a MacBook running Leopard 10.5.1. While I’m only at 19% of the download, Adobe Updater is constantly using between 60 and 105% of (one core of) my cpu. This seems pretty awkward, maybe worth looking into what goes wrong there.
[Thanks for the info, Tiemen. I’ll pass this along to the AUM team for input. A little utility like this should be elegant and unobtrusive. –J.]
    Regards,
And thanks for the moon images. They’re great.
    [Cool. –J.]

  14. As of right now, we Norwegians still can’t get John’s Adobe links to work. I’ve managed to get all updates via the posted LR links and the Spanish page — except PS. These “delayed links” are really weird — maybe we Europeans are really getting 3 days old news on cnn.com, too, without even knowing it?

  15. Found a slight bug in the print dialog box – if you change printer & then click ‘page setup’ the original printer settings box pops up, not the new printer you’ve just selected. Other than that, it’s great to be able to print centralized images at last! πŸ™‚

  16. John – Since loading the CS3 update, I can’t see any images when I open them via camera raw. That is I can see and make adjustments to images in camera raw but then when I click open image, CS3 open, and the image appears in my layers palette but not on my screen? I am using a MacPro running 10.5.1

  17. The links are still a no-go here in Norway, three days after John posted them. I’ve got the files — via the Spanish-German Connection — so this is no big problem, but it remains just utterly bizarre that the servers/pipes/whatnots are so mired in the past. I hope Adobe’s web team will investigate and fix this nuisance.

  18. I think I managed to update just now, and I’m in Europe (though using the English standard edition).
I would like to file a few bug reports, though, and I don’t know how:
    1) The auto updater on OS X consumes 100% CPU while downloading (MBP, 1.83 using 10.4.11).
    2) I can’t double- or option-click opacity mask thumbnail to enable editing of opacity masks in Illustrator, if I’m already in group edit mode (which means I have to ungroup the objects in order to edit the opacity mask of one, and that is a big hassle).
    3) When hovering in the colors palette, over the black or white colors (right side of the color field), the tooltip for it flickers very fast (HSB Spectrum).

  19. John, I need to understand the need to delete my printer, re-add it, etc to use the PS 10.0.1 update. I already have my paper profiles installed on my XP-Pro machine. Do I need to reinstall them also? My basic question is: Do I need to go through a whole new install of my printer and profiles or what? Thanks, RT

  20. PS CS3 print to R2400 (OS X) NOT fixed by latest updates!
Installation of PS CS3 10.0.1 and Epson driver re-installation (Intel Mac 10.5.1) does *not* fix the dark, muddy printing problem on R2400. LR 1.2 and 1.3 print same images correctly. Test is .psd file printed correctly previously in PS CS, but never correctly in CS3. Alternate profiles (for Enhanced Matte) don’t help. Screen looks identical in LR 1.3 and PS CS3 10.0.1. Since installing CS3 months ago can’t revert to CS and Adobe won’t support CS anymore. Have spent hours on the phone with Adobe to no avail. What gives and how can we get this fixed? Thanks for any suggestions.
[Let me investigate and let you know what I find out. –J.]

  21. Adobe tech support suggested I post this today. After spending 2.5 hours on phone we still cannot get CS3 to print proiperly with Epson3800. Print always comes out dark and muddy in appearance. Using calibrated monitor and the same image prints out of Lightroom perfectly. Epson Proint Preview window shows “weird” colors in both CS3 and Lightroom prior to print, but lightroom prints fine. Very frustrating since I must import into Lightroom after producing in CS3 just to print. I downloaded latest drivers and monitor from Epaon and Adobe and I twaeked everything we could think of, but to no avail. We deleted and reset preferences, changed color spaces, let printer manage as well as let photoshop manage but no success whatsoever. John suggested letting you know that 10.0.1 doesn’t correct the problem on my machine (XP SP2, high-end Dell XPS with 2 Gb RAM and GEForce 6800 video card with 256Mb onboard video memory.) Any help would be appreciated since I am a professional photographer in a production environment and need to get this work out ASAP. Thanks.

  22. I’d like to correct and expand on a statement I made in my post of 11/20 regarding CS3, LR, CS, and Epson R2400:
I said that LR printed correctly a .psd image, produced in CS, that was dark and muddy when printed in CS3. In fact, LR printed differently (lighter and off-color) but not correctly.
There are therefore two problems to be solved:
    (1) Finding a set of uniform settings by which to coax CS3 to produce prints identical to those for earlier software, CS in particular; and
    (2) Achieving uniformity across all products, so prints from any of them will be identical, given the same parameter settings, profile, and printer.
    Thanks for your help.

  23. David – may I ask what your working colour space is for CS3 and for LR? Is it Prophoto RGB or Adobe RGB (1998) or something else?
Can you briefly outline your Colour Workflow and application/driver settings?

  24. Phil —
Generally, my working space is ProPhotoRGB in both CS3 and in LR. The particular image that I’ve cited is a .psd produced some time ago and having an embedded profile of Adobe RBG(1998), which I “accept” when printing. It is a production file, so there is essentially no workflow — just open in PS/CS3 10.0.1, “Print”, select the profile (should be SPR2400 EnhancedMatteBstPhoto” but SPR2400 EnhancedMatte” actually does slighty better), select “Relative Colorimetric” rendering and Black Point Compensation”, hit “Print”, then ensure that settings are correct in the driver (I use a preset, with no color management, Enhanced Matte Paper, Advanced: Best Photo, Finest Detail. I have removed and reinstalled all Epson drivers and profiles.
    Dave.

  25. Dave – can’t see any issues with your workflow or process for colour control. I’d suggest that “finest detail” is only useful if you’re feeding well in excess of 360ppi into the driver. I haven’t seen that cause a problem when less data is provided but perhaps worth a try.
Only other thing I can suggest at this point would be to have the image tested on another 2400 set up on another system (local dealer, perhaps?) and compare results.

  26. John:
Just a reminder to see if you have any further information regarding my issues from November 21. Specifically, printing from CS3 on Epson 3800 (dark and muddy) and Print Preview window not even close to actual colors either in PSCS3 or Lightroom 1.2. Images print perfectly out of Lightroom despite bad preview image. This makes a very labor-intensive workflow since I have to produce the image in CS3, then save to a neutral folder, then import into Lightroom, then move to the Print module and print just to get one image out of CS3. There must be a better way! Before the upgrade to CS3, CS2 was never a problem and output matched Lightroom and my calibrated monitor perfectly. Any further suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Bill

  27. As I keep reading about all these printing woes in PS, this idea keeps recurring to me: why not simply export a PDF and print from Acrobat? Or why not import the PSD into InDesign and print from there? Is there Some Special Secret Reason Unknown To Poor Me which makes it absolutely necessary for people to print from PS itself? I have extremely rarely printed anything directly from PS, since I much prefer the printing procedures in InDesign or even the dirt-simple Acrobat — hence I wonder if I’m missing something by not printing from Photoshop? (Nah, I don’t really believe that!) Of course PS *should* be able to print nicely without endless problems — but still, why not use the InDesign or Acrobat route as extremely simple, pain-free work-arounds?

  28. I would like to add my comments to those of Dave, nov 20th. I have pscs3 and epson R1800 and i have the same results with my printing – dark and magenta. Nobody seems to be able to help me with the problem, although Epson are trying. It happened on my old emac and now with my intel macbook. Any help very gratefully received but I’ve tried everything obvious.I’m told it’s a bug but it’s time it was fixed if that is so.

  29. It would appear that there are no responses lately………mmmmmm, I wonder why. Perhaps it is because the problems still exist?
[Are you experiencing problems? If so, please be specific.
As for replies to others, I do the best I can, but I’m neither QE nor tech support. I do forward messages along to QE for review. They contact people when they can. These efforts are all supplemental to the official, supported methods for finding and sharing info. –J.]

  30. Problems printing to Epson R2400 from CS3 and Lightroom are still with us. I have been working with Adobe to try to diagnose the problems reported here. So far we haven’t struck paydirt, despite a lot of attention to profiles and their sometimes mysterious handling. Most curious to me is the continuing inability to get Lightroom (1.3.1) and Photoshop (CS3/10.0.1) to produce the same output given the same input and settings. I appreciate the support and assistance but it is disappointing to see no real progress.

  31. In reply to my previous post on Dec 10
I am having the same problems as :
“Problems printing to Epson R2400 from CS3 and Lightroom are still with us. I have been working with Adobe to try to diagnose the problems reported here. posted above, same printer etc. These problems exist with not only photoshop and lightroom but the whole CS3 range. I to am in contact with Adobe tech support with no workable answers as yet. I am totally unable to print from indesign, illustrator and acrobat.

  32. I was so glad to find this post, I had thought it was me. I can print on my Epson R2400 through CS3 if I use printer manages colour, if not it is very dark The same image reproduces OK using Adobe CS2. Surely someone must be able to fix this?

  33. I am requesting an update on my previous two posts of November 21 and 27. This addresses an untenable printing problem from Photoshop CS3 using an Epson 3800. The problem appears to be well documented in many places, but I haven’t a single response from Adobe regarding a positive solution.
As a professional, using a supposedly professional product, this is unacceptable from a customer servioce and support position. I strongly think that Adobe owes us an explanation and progress/status report on this issue.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
    Thanks,
    Bill
[Adobe folks have been in touch with Bill a number of times, and I’ve asked them to follow up again now. –J.]

  34. Has there been any progress on the finality of resolution in the printing issues associated with CS3. I haven’t been able to find any info that is more current than late November, 2007.

  35. I have the same problem when printing to my Epson 1800 from CS3. I finally just let the printer manage the colors and it’s better. Or I do my post-processing in Photoshop, save the file, open it in Picasa (the free program from Google) and print it from there. And to think I paid $700 for CS3 so I could have complete control of my output — what a joke! Never again. Bridge crashes constantly and Picasa produces better print output. I am DONE with Adobe.

  36. I have not heard from Adobe since mid-December when it was suggested that I try Epson’s new 2400 driver (6.12). I did and Photoshop (10.0.1) crashed. Duly reported to Adobe.
Since then Epson has replaced our 2400 (with no improvement) and the 6.12 driver has become available in the US (it still crashes).
I’m still where we’ve been since August — dark and muddy prints in CS3 and no consistency between CS3 and LR (1.3.1). LR prints way off.
Where do we go from here?

  37. Can someone please explain to me why I have to shut down all browsers to run the Adobe Updater??? What ever the reason is it’s not good enough! #1. Adobe updater eats 80+% of my CPU, and is sloooooooower than a turtle. #2. In the mean time I CAN’T WORK because I’m not allowed to run any browsers. #3. On top of that the Updater is flaky and crashes on a regular basis. #4. The Updater needs to update itself??? That is just wrong. Management at Adobe needs to give the Updater team more time to plan and test before forcing them to release it.

  38. Adobe, it’s time to come clean and be honest with all of your customers. What happened to looking after your customers? There has been no official explanation and it is high time that one came. I have been in contact with Adobe customer support for the last month. The return emails from Adobe are now few and far between with no apparent solution. We are now back to where we started. The wait goes on….

  39. Just updated IDCS2 and guess what still no printing to epson photo R2400!
Still waiting for the next response from Adobe! The case has been open for over a month. Tech support seems to have no urgency to respond……….. the wait goes on.

  40. We have worked with many of you individually to help you through any outstanding print issues – understanding that remaining problems stem not only from Photoshop, but the Operating Systems and printer drivers as well. Throughout these one-on-one cases, we have found that an overwhelming percentage of issues occurring after the 10.0.1 release can be averted by minor changes to work flow and installation (and uninstallation) of updated drivers. As print hardware, software and platforms vary, so too do some solutions to these problems – please do not assume that all that troubles you is from one source (I assure you, it is not).
To assuage outstanding issues we have released a document (alongside 10.0.1); I have provided my email address (bhughes@adobe.com) and encouraged direct communication; and we have suggested driver updates – Epson, Canon and HP continue to update drivers and fix known issues (please check those sources regularly).
Comments to this blog (especially when I’ve provided a direct line to development) are a very inefficient form of communication in this case as it necessitates John mailing engineering and QE a message that is detached from the source and thus at least somewhat out of context.
    We do plan to deliver a revised workflow guide for printing and I will be happy to provide links to driver updates in that. In the meantime, I can give no clearer guidance than closely following the guidelines set forth in the document which accompanied the 10.0.1 release; consulting Adobe’s incredibly rich and abundant User to User forums (http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/index.html);
regularly checking on current drivers – or mailing me.
    Thank you for your support,

  41. Glad I found this site hope it can help me.I am pulling out what little hair I have! I have followed the printing notes for the update to CS3 10.0.1 and cannot get a decent print on my 2200 if I let CS3 manage the color I get a light magenta print, if I let the printer manage color it is light blue. What can I do.

  42. I recently updated my CS2 to cs3. I have the latest version 10.0.1 and I have problems printing to the Epson 4000. The latest driver crashes (6.50). The one before (5.5) prints smaller and offcenter. The fixes mentioned in adobe (solutions 1 to 4) don’t work. CS2 prints without problems. Any hope?

  43. To expand my comment regarding printing problems with CS3, I have Windows XP, with the latest updates. I have no problems with color, just the print offcenter. Thanks for your help

  44. Photoshop CS3 v.10.0.1 craches when I go to File>Open and even when I do Cammand-O. I have a Epson R1800 that has workes fine.

  45. Any idea of how to fix the auto updater in Adobe Creative Suite3 applications? The waring says “The application Adobe Updater quit unexpectedly”. This warning shows up every time I launch any Adobe application…(Photoshop, InDesign, etc).

  46. Mike, I am having the same problem. Adobe Updater quits every time I open any Adobe application. So far I can’t figure out why and can’t find anything online about it.

  47. I’m running Windows XP. Starting in early Nov 2008 I began to get really wierd colors of digital photos on both my Dell laptop and ViewSonic external monitor with CS3 and Lightroom. Then, I noticed the problem with Adobe Bridge and finally with Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat. The colors were simply unrealistic. The colors would be properly rendered in Windows Explorer, MicroSoft Office Picture Manager and Windows Picture and FAX viewer. To further compound the situtation the problem with the Adobe products would come and go. Sometimes the images would be properly rendered and most often not. In CS3 if I go to View/Proof Setup and toggle between Windows RGG and Monitor RGB I can get CS3 to display colors correctly. My color space in my Nikon D300 and in both CS3 and Lightroom 2.1 is set to Adobe 1998. Images display fine in B/W and print fine on an Epson R2400.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

  48. Robert – your display profile is bad/corrupt. The other applications you mention don’t use the display profile, so they won’t even notice that it is wrong.
Also, you would get help quicker in the Adobe user to user forums than in John’s blog.

  49. I’ve got a photographer sending me his raw files from a Canon EOS 40D. I’m on Adobe CS2 (Windows XP) with Photoshop/Bridge and I cannot open the raw images cr files.
I have been all over the Adobe website and I cannot find the updated driver, though I have already updated to 3.7 raw plugin and that does not work.
    Does anyone have a lead?
    Jesse

  50. Adobe Bridge
Help! I have both Photoshop CS3 and CS4 and neither of them loads Bridge. They both give me a message:-“error 2 – photoshop 11 is undefined – photoshop 11 invoke bridge – false false”
I downloaded the Bridge 2.1.1 file but I get a message: “the installer can’t locate the product to be updated” I have tried to put the Bridge file in numerous locations, to no avail.
Ideas, anyone please, by e-mail! tks!

  51. John,
What’s your email? I need to send you the QT video of PSD CS3 error. This is a very serious bug that needs to be resolved. Thanks!

  52. The failure of Snow Leopard to open all files dragged in the Finder is a well known bug in Snow Leopard – affecting many (if not all) applications. Apple knows about it.

  53. This is an old comment but I’m having the problem still. I just upgraded to PS 10.01 and LR 2.6 and I’m having the problem under Snow Leopard. Did you ever get a response? Thanks!

  54. I open my folder to print my poster for Christmas, now photoshop organization stoping me to print. Not system cs2 or cs3. That is the person in your organization stoping.
Yesterday I print myself with my cs2. I told I will up grad when I am in apple store. My appointment is 12,20,2011, so when I go there they will help me to upgrade .
