Thanks for the raw processing feedback

Wow–what an amazing online community: I’m overwhelmed by all the detailed & generous feedback I’ve been receiving in response to yesterday’s query. Yes, there’s plenty of brain-dead self parody out there, but I’m really pleased by the number of people eager to help make things better.
I’m kind of buried in the resulting mail just now, so sorry if it takes me a little while to reply.

  1. you really think we are doing the work for adobe?
we should help to make LR better?
    why?
pay me some money and you get my expertice why C1 is better then LR.
adobe is giving away a shit for free so why should we?
think about your f**king stupid routine with ACR.
all few years we have to buy a new software to use that crap. no sorry no updates for C2.. you have to buy CS4.
f**k and you ask us for help?
    good joke!!
[Another time-wasting, unsubstantiated rant from a fake email address. That makes, what, 5,300 of these. –J.]

  2. say whatever you want.
the people out there who bought C2 now what im speaking about.
your in bed with adobe so what should we expect?
    honesty…? good joke….

  3. [Another time-wasting, unsubstantiated rant from a fake email address. That makes, what, 5,300 of these. –J.]
Seriously, what Do you need a real e-mail adress for?
Wann chase the people who aree ranting about truth about Adobe?
[No, I just think it’s curious that there’s a high correlation between people who make unsubstantiated claims (at least ones they themselves are unwilling and unable to back up) and those too chickenshit to use their real names/addresses. –J.]
I never received as single mail from adobe, wether it was feature request nor regarding other cases.
Use those rants as a motor to make things betterm.
People are ranting because they’re taking their work serious which is of course dependend from the software their are using.
Stop telling us how hard this and that. JUST DO IT!
[I asked for your help in doing so, but you’re evidently not willing or able to show us specifically what you want. –J.]

  4. Hannes,
Our team reads every single report that comes in through our Feature Request/Bug Report form on Adobe.com: http://bit.ly/1R15Qc
I personally respond to dozens of feature requests and bugs reports.
Do we respond to 100% of them? No. But, if people do not leave an email address, either or here or when making a request, we have no way of contacting them if we require more information or so we can provide information.

  5. Really?
    Jeffrey,
I’m curious about my Nth useless feature request attempt to adobe making the PAR-Correction Work properly (Anti-aliased and NOT Crap & Choppy) in PS when working with Video & Film Presets.
    – Importing Video Frames to layers are still limited to 500 Frames (many people ranting about in several Forums)
    – Keyboard Shortcuts Mac vs. PC (eg. deleting (Multiple) Layers via Delete or Backspace key.
Renaming layer via Selecting Layer > hit Return > Rename Layer > hit Return > leave action.
Several GUI gripes you can already read at Adobe UI Gripes.
I’m requesting those things mentioned above since CS3.
Do you need any information on that or can you provide information on that?
I’m not 100% sure now if you read those requests nor if you take it to work on it.

  6. Hannes,
    Sure. No problem:
“I’m curious about my Nth useless feature request attempt to adobe making the PAR-Correction Work properly (Anti-aliased and NOT Crap & Choppy) in PS when working with Video & Film Presets.”
We heard this request from people and made it so in CS4, with OpenGL enabled, the previews are much smoother than in CS3: http://bit.ly/49tWcW
“Importing Video Frames to layers are still limited to 500 Frames (many people ranting about in several Forums)”
The “Import Frames as Layers” command was developed for Photoshop CS3 standard to help with creating animated GIF – It was never intended for full-on video editing. We added full featured video features to CS3 Extended at the same time which leverage direct QuickTime playback as a single video layer – which was designed for full-on video production/paint.
If you’re desperate for getting video frames as layers, a script could be written to automate this process. There are lots of helpful folks over at http://www.ps-scripts.com/bb/ that might help.
“Keyboard Shortcuts Mac vs. PC (eg. deleting (Multiple) Layers via Delete or Backspace key.”
Not sure what the issue is here. The [Backspace] key on windows and [Delete] key on mac delete layers in CS4. They’re the same key just labeled different between platforms. What are you expecting? In CS4 we made it so the [Backspace] / [Delete] key would work with any tool, not just the Move tool due to a user request.
“Renaming layer via Selecting Layer > hit Return > Rename Layer > hit Return > leave action.”
The current behavior is to put the focus on the tool options when you hit [Return]. It’s possible we could add a pref to do this, but we don’t get a lot of request for this.
“Several GUI gripes you can already read at Adobe UI Gripes.”
A few of us monitor Adobe UI Gripes. I emailed the owner of that site for more information on a couple of the issues that I could not reproduce. He could not reproduce the issues either and hasn’t sent me any new information to investigate. I personally don’t like the language/tact that site uses. It’s not very professional in my opinion.
    I hope this helps.

  7. Hi Jeffrey,
thank you for your reply. I’m sorry fr the bouncing mails, i’ve tested by myself, works, don’t know whats wrong.

The first Problem here is that our facility is Mixed with different versions, mainly CS3 and only few CS4 Machines – where CS4 seems not beeing compatible with some grahics cards and constantly crashing, means we cannot use OpenGL. A “native” way of Anialiasing would have been pretty welcome.

Ok,gotta live with that. Thanks for the script-site, i will give it a try.

There is clearly a confusion inbetween CS3 and CS4. I like the way how software develops from version to version, but i like it much more if some new standards (if so) would have been implemented (via update) a bit for older versions, at least CS3, please consider such things for you next release. It’s clearly something that drives me nuts.

i’m working mainly in after effects and i don’t want to miss this way of renaming layers, especially if you have plenty of them.
working with a wacom and double klicking layers isn’t the same as klicking with a mouse. if desktp resolution is very high, you’ll never hit the middle point of the layer inbetween the preview icon and layer style activation, so instead of renaming the layer, the Layer Styles popup shows up.

Yep, true, not very professional, but i get the point of very few gripes.
Take the gradient editor for example. These tiny sliders an their sensitivity including the hurky way of their function are driving me completely nuts any time im using them. we definetly need some improvement here.
Thank you again for your response.
    Hannes

  8. for what’s it’s worth, I commented on the previous thread that CPOne was far superior to ACR in reading PhaseOne RAW files. Well, I must admit that last time i really tired it was sometime last year or before, with CS3 and in LR, not since LR1. I tried this morning and found that LR2 and ACR 5.0 do a far superior job and reading these files than their predecessors. Although the files still do seem to have the same overall clarity as they do from CP1, i think it’s just a matter of some camera calibration to fix. I’m seriously considering running a month or so with a ACR workflow as opposed to our CPone. The ability to use Lightroom will open up a lot of creativity that we did not previously have in our workflow. Thanks John, for making me go back and reevaluate this.

Both of the above are cost decisions. As a customer, you’ve made a decision not to upgrade all your workstations. We can’t really go back and add features to previous versions in a cost effective way.

Ahh. I can appreciate that. There are a few places in our UI that I’d like to see us do better about supporting tablet input. I’ll add this to our list of request for consideration.

Agreed. Making the UI more tablet and multi-touch aware/friendly is something we do want to make better. That said, I can’t promise any features or changes that will be in a future version of Photoshop.
Thanks for the additional info. It definitely helps us better understand your needs.

  10. And unlike much of what you
see on the web, you can take this
    information seriously. It comes from
    France’s DxO Labs (www.dxo.com),
    which supplies sophisticated testing
software to the optical industry. In
fact, DxO’s Analyzer is an integral
part of Pop Photo’s testing suite, and
    we swear by it.
We have such faith in DxO’s good
science that in the months ahead,
when you look up a camera test on
    http://www.PopPhoto.com, you’ll also find a
    link to http://www.dxomark.com. This way,
you can get our hands-on evaluations
of both the camera and the converted
RAW file, along with DxO’s straightfrom-
    the-sensor data.
    Interesting, and an absolute gold
    mine of lab-coat-worthy geekdom.
But what makes DxO do this?
    Altruism? To advance scientific
    research? Bolstering its brand? A
    money-making plan?
    Credit some of each.
After all, the company sells a
    software product called DxO
Optics Pro Version 5.3. It is—as
    you might have guessed—one heck
    of a RAW converter

  11. Thank you Jeffrey.
I have to admit that i’m still concerned about Adobes claims creating World Class Products.
    Wanna know why?
See these Blogs here. Confusing to read, Quoting replys, Formatting, etc. is terrible as terrible can be.
    What is 2+2?
[Yes, it’s all so terrible. We should kill ourselves now. Whatever, dude. I can’t spend any more time trying to convince you that the glass is half full. –J.]

  12. I think John’s done a great job with the blog. He’s improved the comment layout over what was there originally – and has added a separate RSS feed for comments.
I don’t know anyone in the software industry who openly engages customers with the enthusiasm that John does.
[Thanks, Jeff; that means a lot. –J.]

  13. I have to agree with Jeff. The last (and only) time I saw someone else so engaged they were doing it via Usenet (which should give everyone a good idea of the vintage I’m talking about).
Combine that with people like Jeff inviting users to email them and following up based on comments made here it’s a Very Good resource.

  14. Yeah, i’m really close to kill myself from that business. Because it really pisses me off.
Adobe will do what they want anyway and i’m really full of requesting things and trying to help Adobe improving their software.
I’m ranting about your support BECAUSE there hasn’t made any feature request in any release since 2005. These have not been fictional requests, these have been requests which have been heavily disussed at Adobe forums that many many users agreed with. I cannot remember that any made it in any release.
I’m starting to repeat myself over and over again – see entries above about PS. These requests are all entered quadrouple in your requests database whcis seems no one gives a damn about it.
The main point why your software lacks in particular cases is because you don’t have any objective view on your work – plus, that you always know better whats good for you and what’s not. No need to listen to others.
It’s not particulary your fault, that’s just the natural course that human beings are taking.
Dont worry John. I’ll never post anything again in your Blog, just to save you from Manic Depressions.
    [Sounds good. –J.]
