Digital painter John Derry writes,
I’ve put together a quick video that simultaneously demonstrates Photoshop CS5’s painting capabilities as both a “from scratch” tool and photo interpretation tool. Which one is faster? Watch to find out!
[Previously: Sneak peek of new Photoshop technologies, including painting.]
Just awesome to watch the development. I love John’s painting style.
While I am really looking forward to Photoshop’s new painting tools, PLEASE be cautious when promoting photo-painting as ‘just as good as painting from scratch.’
There’s a difference between ‘greater efficiency’ and just plain laziness. My two cents, anyway.
From what I’ve seen of CS5, you guys have knocked it out of the proverbial park. I’m very impressed. And you really seem to intentionally put something in their for everyone (shutterbugs, graphic guys, illustrators, etc.). Really can’t wait to get my hands on it. I know I’m a little early with this, but I’m confident it will hold true… so… WELL DONE. Truly. WELL DONE.
For those of you who believe, “There’s a difference between ‘greater efficiency’ and just plain laziness” about using Photoshop should look at what some of the folks have done with it over at http://www.retouchpro.com
Really you should. Not lazy, just creative using a different tool.
CS5 just can’t come quick enough cos these ‘sneak peaks’ are down right torture…lol
Totally agree with Rich above, when he says you guys have knocked it out the proverbial park because from what we’re seeing, that’s so true!
Great little vid John; thanks for sharing.
Best wishes,
Glyn
I would create a demo of drawing from scratch, but I don’t think anyone would want to watch a 45 minute video demonstrating the creation of a stick figure; things take a lot longer when 75% of your time is spent un-doing mistakes. Fine motor control is not my forte.
On a slightly unrelated note, what is that amazing piece of music that you used? Between the orchestration and brilliantly-executed stereo panning, I found it very difficult to remain seated.
Once I remembered that I was alone, I gave in to the urge to dance around like a fool.
Thanks,
Kevin
Just by curiousity is the photo interpretation tool accurate enough that it can determine what you are painting or is it based off of a photo and you are enhancing it by drawing it from scratch?
I would have to agree with Monty that it does create a laziness style for the less advanced in photoshop. Great tool idea though.
The painting on the left is entirely from scratch; the painting on the right treats the photo of the apple as underlying “wet paint” that I manipulated with a brush.

Very impressive stuff. I haven’t been this excited about a Photoshop launch since 3.0. Keep up the good work. Would love to see some tools geared for ui design sometime soon.
