Video performance hotness in CS5

The 64-bit-native CS5 video apps are faster than ever. I just saw this blurb in email:

  • On average, 130 different benchmark tests are more than twice as fast in Premiere Pro CS5 than in CS4.
  • Working with XDCAM footage in CS5 with a CUDA-accelerated card is more than six times faster than CS4. In software-only mode, it’s still about 33% faster.
  • Compared to CS4, working with R3D footage takes about two thirds of the time in software-only mode–and about half the time with a CUDA card.
  • Simple rotoscoping tasks take one tenth the time they required in CS4, and the time savings for complex, real-world projects are likely to be even more significant.

I’ll try to point to more details when I see them posted publicly.

  1. CS5 is the best release in years, both in Premiere and After Effects, amazing guys!
    Thanks from Uruguay

  2. you forgot to mention the fact that you can grap any footage (include stuff coming from a 5D Mark II) and simply drag it into the timeline. Playback and Edit without the need to transcoding.
That alone is worth the upgrade.

  3. My understanding is that it’s to do with the content aware stuff.
I was at the Sydney, Australia roadshow launch and when they demo’d the new rotoscoping, all the Premiere folks in the audience were going “ooh, ahh!” and were very happy.
The demo I saw showed that masking even against a normal background was very quick and easy and it was smart enough to follow the selected target, saving you from frame-by-frame work.
I’ve never done rotoscoping, so I’m far from an expert, but the demo and the audience reaction spoke loudly.

  4. Thanks Phil. If it is the rotobrush feature then it is hit or miss for me personally. The footage they choose for demos of this stuff is very carefully chosen but in real life it is often a different matter …
