Quick tip: Turning off the color sampling ring in CS5

Photoshop CS5 introduced a color sampling ring (see screenshot) that shows one’s previous foreground color as well as the one being clicked. If for whatever reason you don’t like the ring, you can select the eyedropper tool, then uncheck the “Show Sampling Ring” on the Options Bar.

  1. Will that give me back the Option-Control-Shift keyboard shortcut for visually adjusting brush hardness?
(Option-Control still works for brush size, but something changed in CS5.)

  2. Jaddie Dodd—
    In CS5:
Control-Opion drag left/right resizes your brush size.
Control-Opion drag up/down changes brush hardness.
    —Been there since April! 😉

  3. @Jaddie Dodd: You can move the mouse cursor up/down to adjust the brush hardness or left/right to adjust size.

    1. Is that Michael Ninness, the shortcut master?
If so, it’s good to hear from you again. I saw you at Macworld New York in ’99.
If not, thank you, anyway, kind sir. I sincerely appreciate the education!
Time for a new Power Shortcuts book, no?

  4. I believe the sampling ring would be a lot more useful if the outer ring would automatically match the luminosity of the chosen Foreground Color sample.
