Fire on the mountain

Despite having flown through the deeply punishing winds, doing a touch-and-go landing at Burbank and seeing the flames from the air, somehow until now I failed to grasp the scale of the Southern California fires.  The excellent LA Times photo gallery*, however, brings home the reality.  I’m reminded of the word "terriblisma"–or as we might say it now, “shock and awe.” [Via]

  1. Wow, those are some amazing photos. Although I sure don’t envy what you’re all going through down there. There was a serious forest fire in the Okanagan region of British Columbia a couple years ago, but it doesn’t seem as bad as what southern California is going through now.
As a side, have you seen the Martin Mars water bomber in action? a pair of those planes are based off Sproat Lake on Vancouver Island, and there was something in the paper last week about one of them being dispatched to California to help with the fires. I think it was going to southern California.
[I’ve heard of the Martin Mars, but I’d really like to see the DC-10-based tanker do its thing. –J.]
