Every so often I think, well, we pretty much know the limits of what people can do in Photoshop. And then something like this happens:
Check out the making-of story from the team at Three Legged Legs. Amazing work, guys! [Via Stéphane Baril]
To defuse a possible criticism: I can imagine someone saying, “Whoa, see, Photoshop is trying to be everything to everyone, and now it’s a poor man’s After Effects.” That’s not the case & was never our intention. Rather, video layers & onion skinning enable using Photoshop’s unique paint tools frame by frame. PS complements, rather than competes with, AE’s motion graphics chops.
and sadly sometimes this happens

I actually welcome this, I recently did a hand animated piece and wish i’d known about this functionality then.
Flash has become utter garbage for animating ever since the team began to kid themselves that it was an application platform.
actually one thing that would be sweet in a photoshop update would be the ability to rebind keys more freely. Photoshop seems to protect users a bit too much restricting what they can bind to.
When really I just want to bind next/previous frame to something simple like page up/down. Instead I have to bind it to really awkward combos like cmd+opt+,/.
Obviously I might be able to find a workaround with scripting/etc but it would be nice to have this functionality in the base program.
John, this stunning video inspired Stéphane Baril to create a Photoshop panel to simplify this very kind of animations. It is currently in beta version, in French and English: more info and demo here: http://www.vimeo.com/24973655
